American Airlines Haiti Security Head Charged With Drug Smuggling

MIAMI (AP)--
American Airlines' director of security at Haiti's main airport has been arrested by the U.S. government on charges she smuggled millions of dollars worth of cocaine into the U.S. aboard the airline's planes.

Stephanie Ambroise, who worked at the Port-au-Prince airport, was arrested Thursday and charged with conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S., officials said Friday.

She was being held for a hearing Friday in federal court in Miami.

She is the latest Haitian official to be indicted in the U.S. on drug smuggling charges. Others include the former national police director, the former national police commander, the former Haitian anti-drug chief, the former Port-au-Prince airport police commander and a Haitian senator.

According to an indictment unsealed Friday, Ambroise arranged to have suitcases and other containers of cocaine put aboard planes bound for the U.S.

In return, she received as much as $2,000 per kilogram, and made millions for herself, prosecutors said.

The operation allegedly ran from 1999 to 2003. Investigators said she helped make two to three shipments a month.

It wasn't immediately clear whether she had a lawyer.
