Gotta say, for all the times I've used public transport globally, the subways in New York and Chicago are the only places where it's smelled like vomit or piss. The bigger trains in both were relatively quiet and clean.

Haven't run into anyone with a boom box on a train since the iPod was invented.

(I use public transport whenever possible, but would never want to have to haul groceries by train or bus. That's what home delivery is for...)

Lots of times over the last 30(ish) years, starting when I was in my early teens.

Only real downside can be a lack of options depending on where you live/work. In my case, I can't use it at all to get to work (no runs to the airport at that hour), but if I worked downtown, I could.

Last time I was in Chicago one train stunk, but it was hot out, and there was a lot of "humanity" in the car I was in. otherwise, no issues.

I was out of work in the 80's, no legal vehicle......had a real jones for some KFC.....took a bus to a KFC place.....back on the empty bus, headin' home.....3 Brotha's get on......start talking **** about 'hey look, that white boy, he got KFC'...and proceeded to jerk me off the rest of the ride, even made me scoot my meal closer.....they had a good laugh on the honky....LOL
