I suspect that they're fighting a losing battle. A pretty small minority of Airtran passengers fighting for the perks (extra legroom/bigger seat) at the expense of the large majority who have industry standard pretty tight legroom (30 to 31" pitch). WN gives everyone at least 32". So 9% or so of Airtran passengers lose while everyone else gains by eliminating the bigger seats up front.

WN didn't become the biggest carrier in the world before the DL/NW and UA/CO mergers, measured by passengers carried, by not catering to the relative few who want the extra perks but by offering everyone a decent (if no frills) product at a reasonable price.
