Hi - forgive me - i am not a pilot. My wife and i would like to fly round-trip from washington DC to San Francisco in august with our 150 pound newfoundland. He will be in a crate.

We do not want to fly commercial and put him in the cargo hold. I am exploring charter options, but they are obviously very expensive.

Do you know of any alternatives? Could I hire a pilot who is looking for hours or "hitch a ride" to share costs?

Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

ps - yes - we've considered putting him in a kennel.

Don't think you will take him on the airlines, I know that AA for one has a rule of no pets when the temps get too high, especially if going thru DFW, going non-stop is a different story. Actually pets are allowed in the cabin but they would be either service dogs or very small animals that can fit under the seat in a small kennel, and then I believe only 1, so if someone else booked their ticket before you and showed that they had an animal in the cabin you'd be outta luck. I think your best bet is gonna be to put him in a kennel. Then again you might consider driving an RV.

No airline in the U.S. will transport pets in high Summer. The suggestion to put the dog in the kennel is best for the dog.
