The airline told NBC News that a search-and-rescue mission was under way for Flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200, and that relatives of those on board were being notified. The flight from Kuala Lumpur, carrying 227 passengers from 13 countries, including two infants, and 12 crew members, had been scheduled to land at 6:30 a.m. in Beijing (5:30 p.m. ET Friday). But Subang Air Traffic Control in Malaysia reported that it lost contact at 2:40 a.m. (1:40 p.m. ET Friday).

I pray that they landed safely some how some way  but accrding to cnn news it appears it was a complete total loss of communications  which could mean a terror attack but hope its not

The best place to follow this type of incident for 'mostly' correct information. Of course every forum has its idiots.
No Glen, the best place to follow this type of incident isn't some "Airline Pilots Central" blog. Stick with the experts at AWST (http://www.aviationweek.com/Blogs.aspx?plckBlogId=Blog:7a78f54e-b3dd-4fa6-ae6e-dff2ffd7bdbb&plckPostId=Blog:7a78f54e-b3dd-4fa6-ae6e-dff2ffd7bdbbPost:f0b48f21-997f-4a94-9a6a-cd9c93de2286) to provide you with the most up to date and accurate information.

As airplanes just don't fall out of the sky, there are some very ominous signs where you could safely assume there was a sudden upset of the structure that caused the aircraft to become uncontrollable. The lack of a distress call and the large debris field to name a few.

the lack of any distress signal is in my opin very troublesome.     what cld cause that to occur     I know bomb would be one  but can structural failure be another?  or anything else?

Well then, case closed. Thanks for solving it for us.

And of course actual 777 pilots, ATC, FAA Check Airman, and mechanics who frequent that forum know nothing about causal factors in aviation accidents.

Like I said, there are idiots on all forums...and in newsroom editing:

CNN and the "Bowing" 777. Sigh.

the article cited says that US gov't officials are "investigating" terrorism but later says that cannot make a direct link.

The article says stolen passports can be used for criminal activity but drug smuggling doesn't involve bringing the plane down.

Since Boeing built the plane, they will be part of the investigation... that is almost always the standard in investigations and the NTSB might be asked to assist whichever gov't is responsible for the crash investigation.

Prayers for answers both to prevent something like this happening in the future and to provide relief to those who lost loved ones.
