So close, and yet so far, Mammoth Mountain has always seemed slightly out of reach for those of us in the Bay Area. Despite being one of the best ski spots in America, and being located in our home state, people just didn't want to go.

Legions of Angelenos have long enjoyed Mammoth Mountain, reachable via a scenic six-hour drive for them. But to get to Mammoth from San Francisco, it used to be you had to drive to Tahoe, then drive south another four hours, winding on Highway 395 on the far side of Yosemite. It just didn't make much sense to pass a dozen ski resorts at Lake Tahoe to get there.

Beginning Dec. 17, however, Horizon Air will start daily flights from San Jose to Mammoth airport, and this formerly not-quite-close-enough mountain is now reachable via an airborne journey of just 55 minutes.

great news for Bay Area skiers!
