Singapore Airlines is unlikely to get access to the lucrative Australia-United States Pacific air route for some years, says Transport Minister Warren Truss.

Announcing the government's decision on the Pacific route, Mr Truss shut the door on a proposal by Singapore to fly the route in competition to Qantas and American-based United.

"In terms of Singapore Airlines' request for access to the Pacific route, the government has decided not to grant access at the present time," he said.

"If access is negotiated in the future it will be limited and phased.

"We would not envisage Singapore airlines operating on the route for some years."
