Did this increase price of fares and in turn, have less people flying? Or did it cause people to want to fly instead of driving? Thank you.

Not sure what it did to passenger loads, but I do know at DL, instead of furloughing pilots and F/As, they put them to work in other departments, such as cargo and ramp.
 
Airfares jumped at least 20% and air travel demand fell. It set the stage for cheaper advance purchase 7-day minimum stay airfares to try to jumpstart demand. Eventually, it led the way for deregulation of airfares and routes in 1978, effective in 1979 (just as oil skyrocketed again during the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the Iranian hostage-taking.
