Perhaps you've hit on "something.

STL may NOT be high on the Grand Scale of things for AA, in the near future.

(Think..RDU/BNA/SJC)

So AX abandons a 50-seat RJ route from a former hub to UA's huge hub and it's the end of the world?

When AA drew down STL in 2003, WN added exactly one new flight, an additional STL-LAX frequency. Perhaps WN has added a few more since then, but in reality, nobody swooped in to replace the lost AA capacity. STL had a huge hub with TWA that was bleeding money. One that was far too large for the city's demand. AA gave it a go for 2.5 years but the numbers just weren't there.

Exactly. And CVG, CLE and MEM are about to go through the same experience if the mergers occur.
