Mechs are required a full (15 year in my case, 30 years ago) FBI background check and drug testing.
What requirements for ground handlers?
Minimum wage, wink and nod.

At very least the minimum should be that all US airline workers be US citizens, most of the people in this NYT article were green card holders. Almost 100% of all contact workers at JFK are green card holders. As AA moves through bankruptcy court more and more AA jobs will done by green card holders not US citizens. With regards to the TSA those positions should all be former US military. There will plenty of returning US
vets arriving soon without a paycheck.

Agree about most of the TSA being security theater, but as far as checks go:

I'm not sure how it's done at AA or UA, but just to get in the door at NW, I had to undergo a 10 year check.

Then another one every time I transfered (a total of 5 up to this point), a full FBI one (including fingerprints) after 9/11, a separate full one from customs to work international flights, and then E-verify here a couple months ago.

The government does know a great deal about people who work in aviation and, considering it is a high security area, they probably should.
But they can only know what people have done in the past.... if you are new to the US and have no police record in the US or at an international level, they can't stop anything.
If people who move into air transportation become criminals after being otherwise law-abiding citizens because of the opportunity they now have, then it becomes the responsibility of the aviation system - regulators and companies alike - to uncover criminal activity.
If some airports and some airline operations at some airports are "known" for their criminal activity, then it is incumbent on the airlines to increase their own supervision of their operation.

Green card holders who by choice want to work at the airports to have access to flights from the countries they hold citizenship in.
Drugs trafficking, luggage thefts will only escalate, not decrease.. A ten year background check is laughable to have such ramp access.

The entire transportation system needs to be flushed out

Just becase one is cleared in a criminal court doesn't mean they should be cleared by AA to come back to work.
Plenty of people are found not guilty in criminal court but end up losing on a follow up civil suit. Not sure how that plays out with situations like these guys.

The garbage has been going on for too long. There needs to be controlled exits. Swipe card to end duty, exit through checkpoint, light goes off then backpack/bags get searched and a employee goes through metal detector.

I agree..the point is that IF an employee is found innocent and he was fired becuse of the accusation, the union will probably try to get his job back. Not saying it's right because he may have struck a deal to get the bigger fish and he might be guilty as sin, , but all I am saying is that the union MIGHT be required to give him support.
