Continental, AeroMexico sign marketing alliance

NEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines said on Thursday that it has signed a marketing deal with AeroMexico that would let passengers accrue and redeem miles on each other's networks and bring more revenue to the airlines by expanding their geographic reach.

The proposed 10-year deal, subject to government approvals, brings Continental one step closer into the fold of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that includes AeroMexico and Delta Air Lines , a Continental partner in the United States.

Houston-based Continental reiterated that it plans to join the SkyTeam alliance next year.

Continental, the No. 5 U.S. air carrier, said the alliance on certain flights between the two carriers -- called a "codeshare" agreement -- would start in the first quarter of 2004.

AeroMexico, along with the other top Mexico airline Mexicana, is run by state-owned Grupo Cintra . The two airlines control the vast majority of Mexico's domestic flight network.

Mexicana announced in mid-November that it would drop out of SkyTeam rival Star Alliance on March 31, 2004.
