Dear Working Families e-Activist,

As an activist on the front lines for working families, you should be part of an important discussion about how to strengthen America's union movement for the future.

Today, we launched a website about how we can build real and growing power for working families. The site brings you up-to-the-minute coverage of proposals by national unions, state and local labor movements and allies and comments from union members across the country. Please be one of the first to visit this site at:

www.aflcio.org/ourfuture

Union membership is the best opportunity to improve working and living conditions for working families, but unions are up against massive obstacles that block our growth. Today's unions are asking the hard questions: How should we strengthen our movement for the future? What will it take to give working families the power we need to balance corporate power? How do we make the most of the solidarity and energy of the 2004 presidential election campaign? And what will it take for the union movement to grow?

Please take a few minutes to learn more about these issues and tell us what you think. And while you are visiting the site, don't forget to sign up for a subscription to receive e-mail updates on "Strengthening Our Union Movement for the Future." Click the link below and sign up now:

This year we will mark the 50th anniversary of the AFL-CIO. We've come so far in these 50 years, but we can't rest on past successes. And we can't shrink from today's challenges. America's union movement is charting a course for the next 50 years and beyond. We urge you to take part in this historic process. Please join us today at:

Thank you for your ongoing activism for working families.

Sincerely,
Working Families e-Activist Network

Isnt it amazing how all these people go out, obtain positions of leadership then they ask "what do we do now"? If they were our representatives they would know what we want.

It should not be a mystery as to what the American worker wants. However after years of six figure salaries and generous benifits these guys have simply lost sight.

Their comfortable circumstances have allowed to to focus on a liberal agenda instead of bread and butter issues.

They have taken it for granted that the union worker is satisfied and prepared to fund these other causes with their dues. They want union members to fight for those who are not in unions, in other words giving to unorganized workers for free what organized workers are paying for. Then these same leaders tell union members to lie down and accept concessions because that is "the new reality" and "we have to save jobs" then wonder why those who are not in unions dont want to be bothered joining and why those who are in unions dont want to "participate".

I still have not been told what exactly they want people to "participate" in!

Too "little", too late: too pathetic.

At the same time they prevent any challenge to their dues base by preventing the Union Member from obtaining the Union they want; these Bums have the gall to ask me what they can do to improve?

No representation, compulsory dues collection, no competition from Unions that may do a better job and it is all completely legal.

AFL-CIO No Raid Clause

Article XX: Settlement of Internal Disputes

Section 1
The principles set forth in this Article shall be applicable to all affiliates of this Federation, and to their local unions and other subordinate bodies.

Section 2
Each affiliate shall respect the established collective bargaining relationship of every other affiliate. No affiliate shall organize or attempt to represent employees as to whom an established collective bargaining relationship exists with any other affiliate. For purposes of this Article, the term "established collective bargaining relationship" means any situation in which an affiliate, or any local or other subordinate body thereof, has either (1) been recognized by the employer (including any governmental agency) as the collective bargaining representative for the employees involved for a period of one year or more, or (2) been certified by the National Labor Relations Board or other federal or state agency as the collective bargaining representative for the employees.

While they complain about the barriers to organizing the unorganized they erect even bigger barriers to prevent the members from holding ineffective corrupt leaders accountable and from changing to new unions when members realize that they cant "change from within".

What hypocrits!

The AFL-CIO seems to be only concerned with no raid clauses of one union on another rather than being concerned with corporate America's raid on workers in this country. Union workers specifically are taking the worst hit.

Airlines have successfully broken the unions on their property. They have used the events of 9/11 and the fragile economy to their benefit.

Where was the AFL-CIO for the past 20 years when the attacks on unions began?

Where was and where IS the AFL-CIO when UAL and USAIR are asking bankruptcy judges to abbrogate their labor contracts?

Probably looking for places to hide their windfall from the Ulico scandal and seeing how their portfolio's are doing.

Please list what you consider the TWO greatest weaknesses of today’s union movement .

Answer:

1) The TWU

2) The TWU

You forgot the ALPA at UNITED airlines. They just TWU'ed their pension and now we're all gonna pay for it!

Also we can't forget the iam endorsed "We will be millionaires!" ESOP fiasco at UAL. In the end, the UAL mechanics got pennies on the dollar and couldn't sell the UAL stock when it started to tumble to near worthless.

Yet, the afl-cio business union continues with the same "Get involved with your time and money, while we unaccountable fat cats at the top sit back and collect our millions in dues and six figure salaries from the unwashed masses."

They could not sell it when it was over $100/share but then they were forced to sell it when it was under $1/share, or something like that.

So what does the TWU do? They force us to take a 25% cut in compensation in exchange for stock!!! Hey it only has to go to $300/share for us to make back our paycut!

BINGO, you win the prize.

You got the answers correct first!

With the lack of action we are seeing from the Unions to take a pro membership stance instead of a pro-company one they are assuring self destruction.

Do you mean all unions or simply the TWU and AMFA? I see the AFL-CIO's request a legit one, though the outcome to all of this I believe is "2cnd shelf". Our concerns should be focussed on a "grass roots" effort to send a message to all management, across the line, that there will be NO MORE CONCESSIONS in order to make their business profitable. If the AFL-CIO can assist in this , then they have my support. Even if what they are/have in place now needs upgraded, they need to use it NOW and lead our unions in unison to let the CEO's know we are tired of saving their airlines, time and time again. The public has got to be the ones to pick up the added costs of operating, the public is the one using the service, they should be the ones to pay.

CIO, with all respect, the bit you posted asked for assistance in discussing how to strengthen America's union movement for the future. There will be no unions in the future to worry about at the rate we are going. The ATD has dwindled in numbers, the AMFA has dwindled in numbers, and even the unrepresented DELTA has dwindled in numbers. Soon the only ones left will be Sweeney, Delle, and Mr. Little sitting around discussing "what if". We need to ACT!
