United cabin staff prepare to launch CHAOS campaign

CHICAGO (ATWOnline) - United Airlines' flight attendants plan to use CHAOS (create havoc across our system) job actions should the US Bankruptcy Court agree to the carrier's request to abrogate its contract with the Assn. of Flight Attendants.

According to the union, the legally required 30-day cooling-off period before a strike does not apply when a bankruptcy court agrees to reject a contract.

Under CHAOS, flight attendants do not walk off the job en masse, a step that would result in the shutdown of the airline with resultant loss of cash flow. Instead, the union targets particular cities and flights for limited surprise walkouts that temporarily disrupt operations and annoy passengers while causing a steady erosion of customer support for the airline.

REMAINDER OF ARTICLED DELETED - CONTACT ATW FOR REMAINDER OF ARTICLE IF DESIRED.

Today Air Transport World wrote, earlier this week, the AFA board of directors (including US Airways representatives) approved a resolution calling for a nationwide CHAOS strike at all airlines with AFA representation "in the event that any one of the union's contracted airlines abrogates its existing collective bargaining agreement with AFA" (ATWOnline, Nov. 17). Such a strike would violate a number of US labor laws.

That's what happens when you put a gun to some people's head. Instead of cowering, they might shoot you back, even if they get shot too. In any case, a strike will just send U over the cliff a little earlier. Most everybody has their bottom line. Maybe they've reached theirs. If Lakefield wants to embark on mutually assured destruction, so be it.

This sordid mess with CEOs declaring BK to gain competitive advantage over better managed companies has to stop. Let the dead terminally ill companies die so the others might survive. Crandall is right.

It is about time that somebody decided to stand up and fight. Enough, is Enough already. What is taking place here, is going to spread thru the rest of the Industry with those at UAL being next. Using CH-11 to break all of the Contracts is going to become an Indusrty Standard. Whatever US gets away with, takes place at UAL a short time afterwards. It will not stop here, and will continue to take place at other Carriers as time goes on. What is taking place at the Airlines needs National Attention, and if a Strike is what it takes..so be it. ALL Airlines Employees need to take a stand on this NOW,before it is too late for everyone.

Maybe they don't remember that CHAOS doesn't work. The union comes within a day or two of implementing CHAOS, then company managment decides to put the wheels in motion to (temporarily?) shut down of the airline. Joining a fight where everyone loses is foolish, and this chest beating is a waste of time and money.

If you remember that never happened, the company settled with the AFA before it ever had the chance to do anything. And CHAOS has been proven to be succesful when implemented.

How quickly we forget folks. This scenario has been played before. It has ALWAYS been at the TOP of the wish list for airline CEO's ( to use the BK court in getting rid of Union contracts). Let's start with Frank Lorenzo and Continental. Continental's lower cost structure did not shake down the entire industry. Yes, we have more LCC now. However, there was SW, ATA, Value Jet, New York Air, and a few others. What IS different now....is how airline CEO's are using the same cyclicals such as the high price of oil, tough competition as "being permanetly CHANGED" the new montra used to try and brainwash employees. This of course "all occurred" because of 9/11. Of course, we all know what happened to Frank Lorenzo. Frankly, the judges involved in both U and UAL's BK should be looked at. The desire to do whatever is asked from the company's CEO's is remarkable. What is needed is a finite amount of time in BK and a limited amount of times able to enter it. The shutting down of U and UAL is no more devastating than it was for the over 100,000 employees of the great aviation pioneers PAA, EAL, BI. As every Pan Am, Eastern, and Braniff employee knows, the forces of capitalism did not save them. These people gave once...after that, said no more, the bank is closed.

Good points, NbyNW. The industry will survive the death of US, and even the death of UA. The markets need to be allowed to function. If the unions are willing to burn US down, why not petition the court to liquidate and sell off assets? It would give them a better chance of seeing some pension than they have now.

Moderator...does this USAir topic belong on this board? Please move.

"Judge Eugene Wedoff said he would weigh United's bid to throw out labor agreements if individual unions did not in the meantime agree voluntarily to new concessions." Based on this Judge's (corporate lacky) urge to give Ual Mang. EVERYTHING they ask for including ANOTHER 60 days, kiss the Labor contracts good-bye.
