On the eve of one of the heaviest travel periods to Israel next month, Israeli government tourist officials have launched an unprecedented veiled attack against El Al Airlines, blaming what they claim was an insufficient number of seats for the loss of 500,000 tourists to Israel this year.
“You can’t find seats, so how are we going to promote tourism?†asked an exasperated Eli Cohen, director general of Israel’s Ministry of Tourism. “And why do [Israelis] have to pay so much to get out of Israel [by plane] and return? We’re in a prison.â€
“We’re going to break them,†Cohen added in an interview here, without ever referring to El Al by name.
