It’s been said that it takes a woman to do a man’s job.

As the new manager of Van Wert (Ohio) County Airport, Jennifer Oetting already has given half the office a fresh coat of paint, scheduled a slew of events and completely computerized the billing system, in addition to her normal duties.

And that was only her first month.

Jennifer, of Decatur, is believed to be the first woman to officially hold the title of airport manager, which she took over in early January. Her job entails basically everything except maintenance, from scheduling rental planes to feeding Hangar, the airport kitty.

So far, it’s been quite the learning experience.

She has, for instance, discovered that she makes “crappy coffee,†she says, laughing.

“They said my coffee ‘wakes ’em up and paints the inside of the cup.’ OK, it’s a little strong.â€

The chatty crew that hangs out in the office every day – pilots and maintenance workers who spend hours talking about planes – now makes its own coffee, which suits Jennifer just fine.

She applied for the job because she and her husband, Bryan, were spending a lot of time at the airport anyway.

It all started four years ago, when she bought him a plane ride with an instructor at the airport as a Father’s Day present.

After 30 minutes in the air, he was hooked. He started taking lessons and eventually became a pilot.
