Got an email from the furlough administrator today.

ALPA is conducting a poll of east furloughees. It asked four questions.

#1. Would you accept a recall into a Boeing/Airbus?
#2. If so, when would you be interested in returning?

#3. Would you accept a recall into the E190?
#4. If so, when would you be interested in returning?

Responses for #1 and #3 varied from: "no", "maybe", "yes", "definately", "not-sure", etc.

Responses for #2 and #4 varied from: "immediately" to weeks, months, a year, never, or "delay as long as possible".

Would be interesting to set up a similar poll in here, but I don't know how.

For what it's worth I voted: "possibly" to the Boeing/Airbus with "Delay as long as possible".

I voted, "No" to the Embraer.

Regards,
FurloughedAgain

Your poll is not a poll, no choices.

Some questions to the furloughees:

Having been what you've been through, more than once for most of you, been sold down the river by this company, and your fellow pilots, with most of you being furloughed for YEARS my questions are these:

Why would you even consider coming back? Why would you consider staying in this profession? How much crap can you put up with just to fly an airplane? And why have you hung on for so long?

I know car salesmen making more than any RJ Captain much less a copilot. The rates for the EMB 190 are pathetic. Your union brethern continue to sweep you under the rug (witness the vote for the 190 rates) and have little or no regret in doing so.

Why consider coming back? What is it that makes you want to return?

Why did you come back? What is it that made you return?
Why do you stay???

Different era 30+ years ago. Much different. I was furloughed twice in my first two years Both times for seasonal flying. And I was in my early 20's. The future was much brighter for the profession than it is today.

Now the future is bleak. Look at the pay rates for the widebody's. I'm making less (in inflation adjusted dollars) than when I was a copilot. If I weren't so senior, with another business on the side, I'd have left during BK 1. I can't imagine why someone who has no seniority would want to work here.

Now that I've answered your question hows about answering mine?

At least you got to stay in the left seat! I've been here 22 years and back to F/O. I'm making now what I made 14 years ago.
But I'm still here because I love the job and the people (most of them) who work here. We have some of the strongest folks I've ever met.
I guess I'm an optimist, I figure things will get better. Just because you're not happy you shouldn't rain on everyone elses parade.
I welcome the returning furloughees and look forward to flying with them. This board is definitely not indicitive of the rest of the system.

Someone say I'm not happy? I'm a senior 330 Captain flying 12 days! How much happier do you think I can be? After 30 years the money (or pension) is not an issue. Especially because of my other business.
In short, I'm thrilled to be at the "pinnacle" of my career.

However, I am extremely unhappy about what has happened to our profession. My position is an abberation, not the rule anymore. At one point we all could look forward to where I am. Now, just a small percentage of guys will get to the top. And what's worse, we allowed it to happen and continue to allow it. And while you may think it will get better, it only will if the pilots have the collective will to make it better. Did you vote yes? I didn't.

My point is simply that the love of flying blinds us into false hope. Unless the furloughed guys are still young, they have little to look forward to. I too welcome them back if they choose to come. I just hope they realize what lies ahead of them.

The love of flying isn't worth the amount of time spent commuting to a reserve copilot job and missing your kids growing up. Hoping against hope things will improve while getting older and not moving into another career or business.

This airline is going to have a small number of widebody jets flying to Europe and other places fed by an enormous amount of RJ's doing most of the 737/320 flying we do today. If you are young enough when recalled you may be able to snare a widebody Captain job someday. More likely you will fly an EMB-190 for substandard wages until the cows come home.

But if that is what a guy loves to do, more power to him. But most pilots have the ability to make more money doing something else. Or flying for netjets or a corporation.

BTW, do you know a NetJet G-V Captain makes more than our 320 Captains? And a NetJet BBJ Captain makes more than me.

This is a business transaction. Nothing more.

I would go back only if the pay, retirement, and work-rules that are offered by US Airways are better than those at my existing job.

If the offer, if and when it comes, fails that test then someone else is welcome to my position.

It's not personal. It's a job. I'll take the deal which best supports my family. Right now the seniority number at US Airways is nothing more than plan "B". A nice insurance policy should things turn south at my current employer.

Unfortunately, I am afraid they will be asking for my decision long before the airline pilot profession begins to reverse the destruction that has been done over the last 6 years. I am almost certain that my answer will be "no."

Although, you never know. I'd be a lousy car salesman. 😉

PS - I am aware that the poll doesn't work. If a moderator would care to try and repair it or copy this thread to another without a poll function, please feel free to do so.

Furloughed,

I'm just curious why the MEC (or whoever's idea it was) sent this out. Did anything you received give any indications?

Jim

ps - and best wishes for your future endeavors whatever decision you make when the time comes.

BoeingBoy,

I deleted the letter unfortunately, but I believe the gist was that they wanted to try and project the recall time for the furloughees.

Maybe someone who still has the letter could post the content.

Thanks for the well-wishes. First baby is due in less than 3 weeks, so things are going pretty well.

Jim,

I have similar concerns. I don't think this poll is such a good thing for the furloughees to participate in. I hope all of my brother and sister furloughees think this through before participating.

Dear Fellow Pilot,

The upcoming seniority list integration with America West will have an immense impact on all of our careers, and many furloughed pilots have concerns about how you will be integrated on the final list. I can't say what the outcome will be, but the Merger Committee is working diligently to protect the rights of all pilots on the US Airways seniority list.

We will have a large amount of attrition in coming years, which will require the recall of furloughees. We also know that many furloughees have found job opportunities elsewhere and don't plan to return. While the Age 60 attrition is known, the number of pilots who may not return is unknown. As a result, it is hard for those considering returning to have any idea when they will have the opportunity to come back. This also presents a challenge for the Merger Committee in quantifying the expectations of pilots currently on furlough.

In an attempt to gather some of this information, an online survey has been established where furloughed pilots can indicate what their future plans are in regard to returning to US Airways. The survey information is being collected to enable Membership Services to provide furloughees with some indication of recall prospects and to help the Merger Committee best protect the career expectations of our returning furloughees.

The survey has just four questions. It only takes a moment to complete and the response is absolutely nonbinding, just your view as of today. You can log in again and change your mind as many times as you like until the survey closes. Even if you are not planning to return, your response is important to those who are contemplating accepting recall.

Any pilot-specific information will be kept confidential. The purpose of this survey is to gather aggregate information on the return prospects and career expectations of our furloughees. No personal information, including email address and contact information, will be released.

To participate in the survey, click on the link below (or copy and paste it in your browser) and log in.

If you have forgotten your user ID or password, click on Password Reminder. Your log in information will be sent to you.

Once logged in, the US Airways Pilot Furlough Survey page will open. Be sure to let this page open completely, then click the link "Click Here to take the US Airways Pilot Furlough Survey," and complete the survey. As stated, you can make changes to your selections until the survey closes on June 21, 2006.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact me at (608) 215-6580 or J4J@alpa.org. If you have any merger questions, you can submit them on the Merger Committee page at usairwayspilots.org (check to see if your question has already been answered first), or feel free to contact a Merger Committee member. Their numbers are located at the bottom of the Merger Committee page.

The survey will ask you about your preferences to return to either an EMB 190 F/O or an Airbus/Boeing F/O position. Remember that you can bypass recall to the 190 position as long as you like without jeopardizing your rights to future recalls. You might want to consider the pay rates when answering the question. The EMB 190 F/O rates vary from $41?52 per hour, while the AB and 737 are from $61?85 per hour, and the 767/757 go from $72?98 per hour. These rates are from low to high on the longevity scale; the specific rates for your longevity can be found at:

http://crewroom.alpa.org/AAA/DesktopModule...ocumentID=15230

Thanks for your time and participation. I encourage you to complete this survey, as the validity of the information will be increased by a large response rate. It will help us in our effort to represent those of you who have paid the highest price to get us to where we are today.

I actually just got an email back from him. It seems they are unable to send emails to pilots currently flying for other ALPA carriers through the ALPA email system.
