Sheriff's deputies are closing in on suspects from a troublemaking Amish splinter group in Ohio who have broken into homes and cut off the beards and hair of other Amish men.

Authorities tell HuffPost Crime they are planning to arrest at least four men who are followers of Sam Mullet, a bishop who Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said has clashed with other Amish leaders for years.

At least three attacks in rural eastern Ohio since September prompted the victims -- all Amish -- to look outside their traditionalist community to seek help from local police.

More violence from a vagabond gang of religious fanatics north of Pittsburgh.People are afraid to walk the street here and want something done. This is abject terrorism.

A 70-year-old Amish man had his beard cut off in an attack by his son and grandsons Wednesday in Ohio, the fifth such ritualistic assault there that authorities believe was orchestrated by the leader of a breakaway Amish sect.

The victim, a terminally ill Michigan man whose name was not released, declined to press charges in the assault just outside of Bergholz, Jefferson County, one of four Ohio counties in which similar attacks have occurred since September.
