DALLAS, April 9 (Reuters) - American Airlines said on Wednesday it reached a deal with a union representing one third of its employees that could provide union workers with higher pay if the airline returns to strong profitability.
The agreement with the Transport Workers Union, which represents 34,500 of American''s roughly 100,000 employees, came after union leaders said concession deals struck last week may be in jeopardy unless the carrier sweetened the pot.

American Airlines, a division of AMR Corp. (NYSE:AMR - News), has said that if any of its three main unions rejects the concessions deals, it will be heading to bankruptcy court.

AMR Chief Executive Don Carty said in a letter to the leadership of the Transport Workers Union that this variable wage adjustment program does not change the tentative agreements signed with the carrier''s major unions on March 31, nor does it create an opportunity to do so.

The plan agreed upon with the TWU was also offered to the two other main unions at American. Those unions represent pilots and flight attendants, and the airline said it has not received a response from them.

What is going on? Is voting suspended or not? Did they reach a new agreement or not? If it doesn''t change the TWU''s T/A, then it isn''t a new agreement is it? AA company culture will never change...
