Some folks over at airliners.net are saying there is talk of LCC using the A330 for the new China service, with a reduced seating capacity (40)??? with fuel stops in Alaska as needed.
No US has stated numerous times they are going to use the 340-300 and are in talks with Airbus (which the last purchase order for the A330 gives them the right to purchase A340s) and lessors to get the plane.

Watch the pilot crew news on the Hub (11/28, PHX), and click on the "PHL Gates" topic (towards the end of the topic). You still sure that 330's aren't being considered? Straight from the horses mouth, kids................

I heard it too and boy did DP's ears perk right up when he got that idea in his head. Let's hope they don't pull something like that as that would certainly be the final nail in the coffin.
US Airways pursues A340s after gaining final China rights

Star Alliance operator US Airways is pushing ahead with plans to acquire Airbus A340 aircraft (see cutaway) after receiving final authority to inaugurate service in 2009 from its international hub in Philadelphia to Beijing. Tentative rights awarded by the DOT in September to US Airways were formalized last week.
The regulator also cleared American Airlines for Chicago-Beijing service; Continental Airlines for New York Newark-Shanghai; and Northwest Airlines for Detroit-Shanghai flights.
All 2009 services must begin on or about March 25 2009.
At present, US Airways does not operate aircraft that would support service from Philadelphia to Beijing. While the airline holds rights to convert Airbus A330s on order with the manufacturer to A340s, it has also been sourcing aircraft on the open market.
“We’re still in the process of acquiring the aircraft to fly China,†a US Airways spokesman confirms today. The carrier’s intent to fly A340s on the route remains unchanged, he adds.
US Airways in early November threatened to withdraw its application for China rights if Philadelphia airport officials allowed SkyTeam member Delta Air Lines to move domestic flights into international gates at Philadelphia.
Shortly thereafter, now-defunct operator Maxjet Airways called on regulators to award it back-up authority for the 2009 China award allocated to the Star Alliance member. US Airways responded by informing the DOT that it expects its concerns at Philadelphia to be resolved “long before 2009â€.
Additional new service from the USA to China is in the offing, however. In September the DOT also announced final decisions awarding Delta a new daily flight between Atlanta and Shanghai and United a new daily San Francisco-Guangzhou service. Both carriers plan to begin the new flights in spring 2008.

Now WHAT THE HELL are you implying here? I've already painted my Dining Room in Mandarin Red to accentuate my Ming Dynasty inspired furniture. I have taken cooking courses in Chinese cuisine and and even had a kimono fitting!! (oops, it is LCC we are talking about....probably dressing like a Chinese Peasant is more of what they are thinking in Tempe) They better not BACK OUT of Beijing at this point in time! Heard a rumour that the Crew room in Pit would be converted into an eggroll/ wonton making facility to utilize the space and at the same time save costs in the process. Confucious will NOT Be Happy if Chug-a-lug Doug and Company cancel circUS in China.

From what I understand it’s management that ends up looking stupid, not the employees.
Case in point; blaming tanked DOT stats on the jet stream.
With a fuel stop, the added miles to the route, taxi and refuel time the crew would run out of duty time and flight time. even with 4 pilots.

I see the rumors as simply necessary as a big carrot, because the company and ALPA are about to push a cramdown contract.
This is just like when Wolf promised to buy 400 Airbii and threatened not to do it if the pilots didn't agree to the contract offer. Of course he never bought 400 and he parked planes for every Airbus he purchased.
Same old carrot and stick. Different day. (Oh how nice it would be if Wolf were still here.
