The column said that Siegel had conversations with "United regarding consolidation", aka the UCT & ICT.
Now it seems as if US Airways has "spurned" United's recent offer, most likely for third party investor to fund another corporate transaction, and the Arlington-based company has selected America West instead.

I knew you'd chirp in on this with some spin. You are really full of yourself, sparky! Still desperately trying to justify your past speculations, huh?
Let's all review a few sentences from the interview, shall we?...
"US Airways executives, started the conversations with Phoenix-based America West as long as 18 months ago and also had conversations with Chicago-based United Airlines..."
"Siegel declined to discuss any conversations he had with other airlines."
"But in January 2004... he acknowledged hiring investment bank Morgan Stanley to explore potential asset sales. (767jetz adds: Not Purchases)..."
USA320's spin: This obviously proves that US wanted to buy UA assets, move westward, and be the surviving airline while taking over United's name for market recognition ala ValueJet, allowing US pilots (former UA pilots) to keep their date-of-hire and assume their rightful widebody positions, while simultaneously thwarting the evil and greedy UA pilot's plan to bypass ALPA Merger Policy and attain super-seniority. Additionally it proves that UA is unable to articulate a viable business plan, is unable to find exit financing, will miss their DIP covenants, will be unable to resolve the Municipal bond issues, the ACA going Independence issue, and the Air Wisconsin Issue.
Reality: US had conversations with anyone who would listen, including America West and United. (Why didn't you mention America West 18 months ago?)
Seigel will not comment about those conversations, confirming nothing at all except that those conversations included potential asset sales. So the conversations between the business partners could have went something like this...
"We (US) are in deep trouble. Since you have actual banks lined up and we don't, anyway you could ask for some more money and then buy our assets?" Answer: NO. "Well, just thought I'd ask."
There you have it. A conversation! And as for other "strategic alternatives," US didn't want to be the awkward teenager who goes home disappointed, which implies a sense of desperation, not domination.
Now, go ahead and send me another PM calling me a liar. Everyone here knows the truth about you.
The fact is that no matter what you speculated in the past, I told you it wasn't going to happen and it didn't. And you still can't stand nor admit to the fact that we were right and you were wrong, time and time again.
