UBS UPGRADES LEGACY AIRLINES, SEES BIG MERGER ON HORIZON

UBS upgraded a bunch of U.S. legacy carriers on Wednesday, saying it expects a major merger to be announced in the next six months and airline stocks to rise as a result. "We're bearish on the airline fundamentals as they stand today. However, we believe airline management teams will finally play the consolidation card in 2008," UBS wrote. The broker told clients it thinks a deal between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines Corp. is most likely, which it said would put investor pressure on Continental Airlines Inc to act, perhaps by merging with UAL Corp. UBS upgraded AMR Corp. to neutral from sell and Continental, Delta, US Airways , Northwest and UAL to buy from neutral.

That light your seeing is actually a cops flash light that’s waving around in front of your face while he asks you “just how much have you had to drink today?â€￾

Liquidation might be a better option. Bigger bang for the buck for the investor's money!

In deed they will.

Consider this if you will.

  1. US Airways has the second strongest balance sheet in the USA behind WN.
  2. Close to 3 Billion in cash.
  3. All airline stocks aren't doing great
Yet only US lands at the bottom of the heap. Could it be that the wholesale incompetence of US 2007 edition could be at play with the precipitous drop in shareholder value?

Could it be the companies attitude towards customers and employees have led to the steep decline in stock price?
I think it just goes to show that the market is screwed up. Stock prices often have nothing to do with the overall health of a company and are often driven by "feelings" or "instincts" of large investors. Airlines are generally pretty poor investments for those looking for radical swings as an area to make quick profits over the short term. Considering where the stock is now, it will go up this year. I would expect some investors to pick it up with an eye towards industry consolidation.

BINGO!

Everything in your post is 100% accurate. US AIRWAYS needs to focus on cleaning up housekeeping matters. As for Goldenram, Boss Canale and Brickner, their image is one that has 'no steam or juice' on this property. Canale himself can't go into the CLT local, PHL local and a host of other locals without being '***** slapped'. He will eventually be kicked back up to the United Board of Directors where him and his collared shirt and tie belong.

Canale's boys will soon be experiencing 'great financial pain' as they get thrown out of office. And Canale will get his retirement reward at the polls 'a bit early'.

regards,

In that situation I would expect a small amount of growth into markets that see significant reductions due to consolidation.

I watched the same broadcast yesterday on CNBC, and I waited to see if they would say something/anyting about USAirways...not one word squeeked out. There was not even a mention of the mega merger attempt by USAirways in 2006 to acquire DELTA while in BK. zip, nothing. I don't think LCC is on anyone's radar.

I agree. With the Stock price headed towards single digits, what's to keep an 'investor' from buying it up just for the cash and assests (ie NY area slots, Int'l routes and a/c)?

Add to the that the unhappy workforce and the labor issues, and the ability to eliminate waste and use only what is worth it, makes that a very real possibility.
