The America I grew up in is gone, and won’t ever come back. As nostalgic as I am from time to time, I also remember that we didn’t have Novocain in those days and I know full well that the politicians of my youth were not inherently better than those who lead today. But there are important aspects of that old America we should all be loath to do without – particularly its ability to build facilities that were the envy of the world, to offer its citizens a best in the world education, to offer abundant jobs and opportunities, and to inspire collective action by an involved citizenry.

I think most Americans feel as he does.

Too bad it will get lost in the talking points of the far right and left of politics.

Airline deregulation a failure

No one is listening even though he is balls on (IMHO).

• First and foremost, we have failed to confront the reality that unfettered competition just doesn't work very well in certain industries, as amply demonstrated by our airline experience and by the adverse outcomes associated with various state efforts to deregulate electricity rates. In my view, it is time to acknowledge that airlines look and are more like utilities than ordinary businesses.

• Second, our government has failed to develop a national transportation plan of any kind and has thus been indifferent to the continuing decline of our highways, our railroads and our airlines.

• And third, the government has failed to invest in the capabilities and resources which only it can provide, most notably by failing to implement the new air traffic control system that everyone agrees we desperately need.

In my view, it's time to do something about all three.

But if we want to reclaim those abilities, we are going to have to stop behaving like morons and begin to speak up about the many and obvious lies we hear from our present and aspiring leaders.

I don't think airline dereg failed, its government intervention (GM) that hurt the industry. Many should have gone the way of the Esdel a long time ago.....still there is excess seats and a lack of fannies to fill them.

Your reference to/about the Edsel sure brought back memories. My late Pop had an Edsel. (1958) 😀

While I tend to agree with Mr. Crandall the Genie is out of the bottle and the airline industry will never be what it once was.
