CLE dehubbed

All the best to the nearly 500 UA employees affected.

The majority of cuts are flights on small RJs highlighting the precarious nature of that type of flying.

Cleveland was a hub for Continental when it merged with United in 2010 to form United Continental Holdings Inc. Ever since the merger, people in the industry have assumed it was in danger of losing its hub status, because the airline now has United's Midwestern hub in Chicago.

Who didn't see this coming?

In June, Delta Air Lines Inc. announced it would be closing its Memphis hub, which it had inherited in its 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines. Delta already has a huge hub operation in Atlanta.

For WT... :p

Surprising they mentioned SLC, pretty sure the writer meant STL. DL has made some adjustments to SLC but no large scale cuts.

700 will say "no one is guaranteed a job in a specific city in the airline industry" and that the company decided to cut flights and jobs, not the IAM. But yes seems the writing is on the wall. Besides CLE has a cinderella date as it is so after 2018 they could outsource entirely.

Hate to see this.
Having worked in CLE some years back it was a great place.
I worked there during the big Black out. What year was that 2004? I cant remember.

Everybody knew it was coming. CLE is way too close to the mother hub @ ORD. This is the issue. But to drop it on now after we have had cuts. And the media got the story first before the employees is just a shame. Even the station manager and directors didn't know about this bombshell. We all thought that CLE was going to slowly wind down from hub status, not accelerate.

The convenient excuse of the new pilot rest rules (FAR 117) gave them all the wiggle room they needed against the city and state of Ohio, due to the "losses". That and the rejection of the XJT contract sped things up. With the piss poor pay that RJ pilots are getting and many will be getting their "golden ticket" and moving on to mainline, who wants to be a pilot now? It's going to be "right sized" as a station, but the pilot; FA; and MX bases will remain. So about 430 employees (IAM employees) will be lost and about another 40 Chelsea employees. At least the affected employees can bump into a hub (probably ORD or SFO) if they want to keep their jobs. Problem is that the company couldn't get their crap together on this present RIF. People don't know what stations are available to move (or bump) into. We just had a RIF recently and many people have been bumped from FT to PT because of the "flight schedule" change. PT caps was given up in the IAM contract (sUA BTW only - they were the only group out of the five which had scope). sCO (both sides - BTW and ATW) had no move package either. So the company is taking advantage wildly.

Hopefully my brothers and sisters can find something where they can move to, or given a decent package to retire with. (Funny thing is that if the company wasn't so cheap with the buyouts, they would get the required numbers and much more - people want out! So please don't have some sort of convoluted formula like the last time and offer a good buyout) CLE is not that junior. First Cargo; then the RIF's and reductions; now this? What's next? Morale is so bad here, it isn't funny. You really hate to come to work at this place. I heard stories about the Lorenzo days, and survivors of that regime says this is just as bad or worse.

God Bless you all and work safe!

Hate hearing it too.  Does anyone know what employee groups will be affected?  And will they be given a choice to relo, rather than the streets?  I thought UAL/CAL merger that it was promised no-layoffs due to the merger...

Thanks for the perspective. The employees at CLE are first rate, it really will be a loss to many FFs who travel through CLE.
