Clearing the Air

Editors note: The following Letter to the Editor has been sent to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette regarding its story earlier this week suggesting that senior management was in line for pay raises in 2004.

Dear Editor:

Your story on Tuesday, March 9 “US Airways’ leaders in line for raisesâ€￾ incorrectly assumed and reported that CEO Dave Siegel and other top executives at US Airways were going to get pay raises this year.

The merit increase pay plan that was the subject of the story is for administrative and other management staff and is identical to what we described in the airline’s plan of reorganization and the budget approved by the Board of Directors (which includes representatives of our labor unions). The pay adjustments are patterned after a pay restoration plan in place for flight attendants.

Dave Siegel and the other senior officers of the company were due for a small pay adjustment at the beginning of 2004, but the senior team had already decided that they would forfeit their pay increases. Senior management is not receiving any pay raises, as your story suggests.

Sincerely,

Chris Chiames
Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs
