US Airways Mechanics:
It’s About Job Security!
When certified by the National
Mediation Board (NMB) as your
representative, the Teamsters
Union (IBT) will protect and retain all heavy
maintenance performed in-house by US
Airways. The IBT will negotiate a new
agreement for the integrated workforce that
protects your SCOPE (job protection) and
brings as much outsourced maintenance
in-house as possible in the future.
Consider these facts:
• By law, the company has to abide by the
provisions of both the existing Teamster
and IAM agreements until such time as
your certified representative negotiates a
new amalgamated agreement with the
merged airline. Furthermore, the Teamster
Constitution requires that agreement to
be voted on and ratified by you;
• The US Airways contract provides
SCOPE protections that cannot be changed
by the company unless your bargaining
representative negotiates such changes.
The Teamsters have no intention of
negotiating this language away under
any circumstances;
• The outsourcing of America West Airlines
(AWA) heavy maintenance took place in
1995, prior to the Teamsters being certified
as the AWA mechanics’ representative.
In fact, In fact, AWA fired 500 mechanics
and outsourced heavy maintenance in
a futile attempt to break the Teamster
organizing drive;
• Relentless legal pressure by the
Teamsters resulted in a decision by the
NMB—which was upheld multiple times
in federal court—that granted the 500
fired mechanics the right to vote in the
successful election that
resulted in Teamster
representation. The
Teamsters then
negotiated preferential
rehire rights for the 500
fired mechanics, and all
of the 500 mechanics
who wished to return are
once again employed by AWA as mechanics;
• Article II-SCOPE of the current AWA agreement states that all maintenance work performed in-house by Teamster mechanics
shall remain in-house and be performed
by Teamster mechanics. Management is
prohibited from subcontracting; this has
been tested and upheld through the
grievance procedure; and
• Together we have an opportunity to return
to the bargaining table and negotiate a
new agreement for the combined group
once the NMB determines who your bargaining representative is. By protecting and
retaining your existing US Airways SCOPE
language, expanding the AWA SCOPE
language and negotiating the return of as
much outsourced maintenance as possible,
we will strengthen the entire membership—
active and furloughed.

US AIRWAYS AMT UPDATE
Seniority Integration questions. A number of you asked what the IBT meant by seniority integration in accordance with Allegheny-Mohawk sections 3 and 13 and that this be accomplished
in a fair and equitable manner. It is the IBT’s view that integration should be accomplished in
accordance with the original Allegheny-Mohawk concept. That concept provides for mechanic
(AMT) date of hire integration with the proviso that no member will be furloughed because of
the merger. That is what we plan to work for. Comments to the contrary are simply meant to be
misleading.
Station visits. IBT representatives will continue to visit your stations in order to hear your concerns and try to answer your questions. It is our intent that an amalgamated Agreement be an
improvement over what you work under today. Your current bankruptcy driven Agreement is
not relevant to the new company and we will bargain to improve the terms of that Agreement.
Although labor peace is important to the company, an unacceptably long contract is not in the
best interests of the AMT’s. Going forward should be a cooperative endeavor and not a one-way
street.
The importance of signing cards. With emergence from bankruptcy, the incumbent union no
doubt will seek a single carrier ruling in order to try to close off continued campaigning. In
order to be represented by the IBT, you should promptly complete and return an IBT representation (organizing) card. A sufficient return of cards will ensure an election, which permits you to choose a new representative. We believe that is in your best interests.

US Airways: Merger with America West may not perform as expected'
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — US Airways Group said its acquisition by America West — the cornerstone of its bankruptcy exit — will face "significant challenges" and the combined company may not perform as expected.
While the acquisition will result in certain synergies and growth opportunities in the future, the company said its significant operating losses have not subsided and will likely continue into 2006.

US Airways was acquired by America West Holdings in September as part of its strategy to emerge from more than two years of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The combined company retained the US Airways name.
US Airways had estimated that the combined company would see about $600 million in operating cost savings and revenue synergies. However, in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, US Airways said Tuesday it "cannot assure" the synergies will be realized.
"We may not perform as well financially as we expect following the merger," the company cautioned.
The integration of the two air carriers "will be costly, complex and time consuming," US Airways said, and management "will have to devote substantial effort to such integration that could otherwise be spent on operational matters or other strategic opportunities."
In a separate filing, US Airways said America West Holdings issued warrants to purchase 386,925 common shares at a price of $7.27 per share. The warrants — a substantial discount to the company's Monday closing stock price of $31.99 — may be exercised any time before Jan. 18, 2012.
The company said it will not receive any of the proceeds from the sale of the warrants.
The new warrants replace those issued in 2002 to the Air Transportation Stabilization Board, an arm of the government, and to AFS Cayman In October, US Airways Group agreed with the transportation stabilization board to buy back all of its outstanding warrants for $115.8 million.
