Crandall says AA needs to clean Delta's clock

Word cloud in 3..2..1..

Btw, Fang and Richard Anderson have the chops to run a good airline.

Ah hell, Fang for president 2016. The White House could use a big ashtray in the Oval Office.

"Now what you’ve got to do, you’ve got to recreate the pride in your employees. You’ve got to get it back up to the point where you’re not satisfied with being anything but no. 1. No. 1 in on-time arrivals. No. 1 in [fewest] baggage mishandlers, No. 1 in smallest number of employee complaints you need to be at the top of the metric"

Well, since Delta is actually mentioned in an AA topic.....WT should be beside himself with a response.
Expect a lengthy dissertation from him.

You have 2 groups that have spent most of the 2000's being beat into the ground. It's either gonna be amazing, or just more of the same, albeit on a larger scale.

Parker & co. have a tight rope to walk here; do it right (which is harder), and it could be a case study in business school in a few years. F it up (which is easy), and it'll be a basketcase of an airline...

he got this part right.

"American should have gone bankrupt at the same time, the same time as the other companies. But they chose not to do that so American sat there and lost money for ten years in a row. And in the process, they abandoned a lot of flights and shrunk their presence and now they finally went bankrupt. "

but not this.

"Now they've got competitive costs "

AA's mainline CASM was not lower than DL's which makes it really hard for AA to talk about how it going to clean DL's clock when it is AA, not DL that not only doesn't have a cost advantage but also has enormous competitive pressures coming from all sides... WN just jumped into the FLL int'l market on top of the Love Field thing... the west coast is a shootout.....DL is throwing 300 seat A330s into top JFK markets again.

And AA appears to be pulling out of JFK-SJO and SXM and is down to 2 flts/day to SJU by the summer.

Crandall also does not say that AA CAN clean DL's clock...just that it needs to.

Crandall: Yes they have and have been very successful in performing and now what American has to do is clean Delta’s clock....[Delta CEO]Richard Anderson is a very smart capable guy. So he’s a tough opponent. If you want to be the best airline you’ve got to beat the tough opponents.

Competition is good... if AA can regain lost territory, they should but the uncomfortable reality is that AA will be fighting fires in far more places than any airline has ever had to fight... all at the same time trying to merge.

As for the labor peace, there is not much that will really make a difference except to throw money at the employees... which Parker cannot afford to do. AA and US people will tire of the platitudes - even if they do come - in short order and expect to see pay raises, not promises 6 years down the future.

For my money, Parker's comeptition isn't Anderson, it's Hauenstein & Jacobson...

Money is good, but not always enough. Like I said; if he pulls it off, it'll be something to see. And if not? Well...

I'm not holding my breath.

The best thing that could happen to Parker, is to be put into a LOCKED room for 24 hours with just (uncle) BOBBY,....then wait to see what emerges.
Don't forget all these guys belong to a very exclusive club.......When each one passes the torch to their successor, their status in that club increases.
My bet is that after that 24 hours, they emerge laughing with their arms around one another.

From the article:

"Crandall: The chief executive of every airline needs to be out on the ramp, needs to be out in the terminal, needs to be leading the charge. He needs to pay very detailed attention so everybody knows that doing anything other than No. 1 is not acceptable."

Is Parker known for this? I don't remember him being out on the ramp, etc.

He doesn't do that.  Scooter (Kirby), either.  They may VISIT these places and do some glad-handing, but never leading the charge.  They do, however, hold "town hall" type meetings with the employees at various times, and with the crews at ther training centers.  Normally they tried to do that every month, but have excused themselves for most of 2013 claiming to be too busy with the merger (which is probably true,)

The most likely reason that you don't see Parker or Kirby out and about is labor unrest. If they finally decided to take equal care of all workgroups, they wouldn't have to worry about getting ripped apart during station visits. Ever notice that they only show certain select town halls, with most being only crews or HDQ folks? What do you think the ones in PHL or CLT may look like with a bunch of rampers and mechanic's speaking their piece? BTW, meetings with Doug and crew are far and few between in either of those cities.

bingo... taking the locks of the C suite at Centerport is one thing but actually rubbing shoulders with the real workers is not a risk you want to take when this forum would no longer exist without labor unrest at AA and US.
