So money and greed are motivating people to do things??? What a concept! Just imagine where the US would be if our American history was built on people that are motivated by increasing their value.
Come on... this is capitalism at its best! Throughout US history a greedy person (or persons) was motivated by money and in return for their greed, gave something that benefitted the country beyond the detriment caused by the individual's greed! Railroads, Steel, and technology industries come to mind.
The
Chicago Climate Exchange can be the same type of thing. As posted in another thread months ago.. the CCE can be a good thing because:
1) The emission-reduction commitment required by participants is stronger than current developing US laws.
2) It is completely voluntary, yet more than 250 participants have joined... such as Ford, Dupont, and Motorola.
3) It provides
monetary incentives (
greed) to decrease pollutants.
4) It reduces the potential for overbearing governmental intrusion.
5) It allows US companies to compete in European markets that have strict environmental standards.
6) Companies will likely reduce pollutant emissions by making operations more efficient, thereby reducing pollutants and increasing profits (
greed).
7) It is self-regulated by the respectable NASD. They will audit annual emissions and help to ensure that fraud and manipulation does not occur.
I am not sure which side of the fence I fall on in regards to global warming (not enough evidence either way for me); but I proscribe to the better safe than sorry method here, and CCE is a great tool for that.
