Delta cuts back MCO by two thirds!

The article is contradictory in saying that cutting gates would reduce DL's dominance at MCO but then says their share already fell earlier this year.

DL has long had way more gates than they use at MCO as evidence by the number of carriers they have been able to ground handle.

Also, the general public doesn't have a clue who is the dominant airline in a market between a couple carriers. DL has long had well in excess of 1/3 of the market and that is not likely to substantially change and WN will likely continue to be a very strong player. And I believe DL and DL Connection still serves way more cities from MCO than WN.

It is far better for DL to see those 764s and 777s heading over the pond than on 1 1/2 hr jaunts to Atlanta.

DL controls barely 20% of the MCO market (even counting DL Connection). It's been quite a while since DL had a third of the market.

However, your point about it not mattering who is dominant holds true. Particularly given the low-yield nature of MCO, it's not necesarily such a great thing to be dominant.

From the article:

The change "does not signal a reduced commitment by Delta to the Orlando market," Delta spokesman Anthony Black said. The airline will not decrease its average of 115 daily flights, he said, though the number of seats will drop.

On the surface this would seem to be a good move; same amount of flights, just getting more use out of the remaining gates.

DLFlyer,
you might want to check DOT enplanement stats. DL has held as much as 40% of MCO's enplanements during the past 10 years. MCO does not have to be low-yielding. There is a higher paying segment in any market; DL just chose for years to be a "mass-transit" airline which meant pumping lots of seats in and out of Florida. That's a dicey proposal at best but it won't ever work when half of those passengers are connecting at a hub; fares as low as $49 are never profitable on a connecting basis.

Who cares about 10 years ago?

Here's the marketshare for October 2005:

Delta 14.6%

DCI:
Chautauqua 3.84%
Comair 1.37%
Freedom 0.38%

Delta Total: 20.19%

Southwest: 18.90%

As you can see, DL is no where near a third of MCO traffic.

Everytime I've hopped a ride on Delta, I've noticed a massive chunk of unused gates @ MCO. I frequently fly on Midwest to Milwaukee, and they are at the end of one of DL's concourses and I have never seen more than 1 DL plane on the ground parked on that side...

Now on the Song side, I've only seen a small handful of planes at a time...

This is just pure economics for them... Now to find out which airlines are going to move into one of their old piers.... *smells AirTran*
