So any random bs fee levied by outside forces should be absorbed by the company? Since when does that ever happen?

Lufthansa has already imposed fees much larger than this... and remember that the EU has said that airlines would get about 85% of the credits they need to start the Emissions trading program this year... thus the $3 fee could grow by 6X in order to meet future year requirements.
With demand to/from Europe likely to fall because of economic problems, implementation of the ETS could be a huge hit to EU airlines.
