Denver International Airport reported an 8.3% increase in passenger traffic during January, helped in part by the return of low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines.

The total of 3.5 million passengers represented an increase of nearly 300,000 passengers from January 2004, airport officials said Tuesday.

Dallas-based Southwest started service in January to three cities from Denver, attracting 78,648 passengers for 2.4% of the market share, DIA figures showed.

Denver-based Frontier Airlines reported a 16% increase in passengers for the month while United Airlines of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and its low-fare unit, Denver-based Ted, reported an increase of almost 4% in traffic.

"Southwest certainly was a part of the increase in January," airport spokesman Steve Snyder said. "We'll see in the coming months what the trends look like. It'll probably be a little easier to make a judgment (about Southwest's impact) at the end of the first quarter."

United remains the largest carrier at DIA with 57.4% of the market share while Frontier is second with 19.3% of the share.
