In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict
control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."
And for plenty of good reasons, since it can:

1. cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. is a major component in acid rain
3. cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. contribute to erosion
6. decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. be found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 150 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

One hundred forty-three said: YES
Six were undecided
Only one knew that the chemical was...

WATER!

The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"

He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to the
alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in
our environment.

What's really frightening is that these same people help elect our local
and national leaders!

Is the other side not doing the same thing?

Energy gives off no pollution.
huge amounts of power from a small amount of material
...etc

Radio active waste with half life measured in centuries. No reliable disposal method .... nah there is no down side.

Asbestos, DDT to mention a few other safe and reliable materials. I do agree we are very gullible.

Always believed the "Global Warming Theory" = Junk science !

Thanks for pointing this out how gullable people can be !

If you are wrong, do you have access to a 'do over' button? Not like we get a second chance.

I am guessing you did not ace chemistry in college? High School?

Is evolution "junk science?"

So 6 billion people and all our stuff have not and will not have an impact on our planet?

A lot of the 'civilized' countries are taking the helm somewhat as far as climate cleanup goes.

However....your third world hasn't been. Some claim we are the biggest user of energy but at the same time do a better than average job of cleaning our environment while providing for a majority of the worlds food and other items.Kyoto wants to penalize us while turning a blind eye to China,Russia and many other 3rd world countries. This is not right. In the end the goody two shoed clowns in congress will only drive up our energy costs here at home and the factory costing more jobs and crippling the economic mess even further...all in the name of Liberalism of course.

Just worry about those pesky cow farts......

What the heck? Did you answer "yes" to the petition?

I was not even considering the energy use. I was thinking of will the concrete laid down, forests cut, high rises and the like which effect wind currents, temperatures and the like. Then there is all the waste dumped in to the ocean which affects the algae blooms that every other ocean life form depends on in one form or another. Then there is the wast dumped into the land it's self from land fills. And the list goes on.

Dell, you and I are trapped in a cave. We are running out of air. I decided I am not going to help dig. Are you going to sit there also and not dig or will you dig to try and save or at the very least extend your life by a bit in the hopes that maybe at some time in the future I will try and dig or a rescue might happen? If the situation were reversed, I would dig till I could dig no more. I don't care what you do. Sure it would be nice of you to help out, but I am not going to sit idly by and just die because you will not help dig. The digging may or may not help but wouldn't that just suck if the rescuers got to you a few seconds too late because they had to dig that extra foot or two. Had the two of them only tried to dig out we could have saved them .... what a sorry pair they were......

Well what I mention goes way beyond energy use if you read it.
Energy use is for making things, cooking things, etc all which give off some type pollution or byproduct of that process. Some countries are utilizing those end products or cleansing them of their unwanted toxic remnants. Not all mind you but like I said...'civilized' countries.
You make a parking lot at the mall...in Dell's world there would be pores through the asphalt where water could find its way back into mother natures belly(cuts down flash flooding). You could do things with buildings and I bet its being looked into in the 'civilized' countries.Ever hear of the experiments in the desert where they did the Stone's thing? They' painted it black'....to see what effects it has on local clime....
Global warming is bunk science made for social engineers.....sure we have an impact on our planet just as deer overbrowse and bear splinter bee hives and tree trunks for food.
We have to do what we should in our backyard and I think for the most part we are. Then we go to the 3rd world countries which pollute and destroy and attempt to educate.
The answer isn't in a bunch of touchy feely Liberals who survive on campaign contributions from the green communitiy on some friggin' crusade based on PC that's going to devastate our and the globes economy.
Carbon credit scheme's are for your rep's to reap monies on our backs....ask AL.
You think putting wind mills all over mountain tops and harnessing wave power won't have effects or solar panel farms(paint it black)??
As Mister Miyagi said...you must have balance.....yin and yang dude.....no time for knee jerk reaction like the greenies have been trying...even NASA is being politicized.
Funny thing though......alot of the data that has recently been used is prior to 2005 if you note....since then its been going the other way. 😱

As to the algae blooms...that's interesting but I think the real problem is over harvesting our food stocks.

As to the cave thing.....two people breathing the same air and one doesn't want to help dig out but use the same air.....nothing personal...logic says time for survival of the fittest.

I dissagree. While we may be able to develop technologies that will have less impact, they will still have substantial impact. Population growth is exponential. We are on track to add an additional 2.5 billion people on the planet by 2045. There is no way that we do not have a substantial impact on the planet. Deers and bears doing their thing are kept in check by nature. When food is scarce, there is a die off and some animals even retard the birth cycle. Those are small localized events that are easily remedied by nature. As far as I am aware, humans are the only species on earth that can alter their environment to the degree that we do. Our homes do not decompose like those in nature, our roads, buildings, infrastructure all have massive impact on the environment. Our waste is enhanced by our shear numbers.

As for the cave example, we are in two different compartments. You cannot get too me and I cannot get to you. Two of us digging to a common goal will assure us success, one of us digging may or may not be successful. Since we are separated, you cannot get rid of me. You can only try to convince me to help you. If I do not dig, are you not going to dig?

Sure it would be great if the rest of the world cut down on their pollution, but if they do not, does that mean we should not. By the US doing it's part, it may buy us enough time till someone else come up with an alternative solution. Worst case, it delays the inevitable by a few years/decades.

The best scenario at the moment is for us to keep doing what we've been doing.Yes some improvements may be needed but we have come a long way here in the US.
I didn't say if 3rd world countries are polluting, that it makes it ok for us to.
Also, its no excuse to over penalize us for our consumption when the benefits are enjoyed by other countries.....in fact ,if they benefit through our production consumption then maybe it should be attributed to them.
I think if you check, the US is one of the leaders in pollution/environment control/cleanup.

Still the GW thing is about a political agenda....signs point to a cooling trend...now WTF do they want?

And about buying time.....mother nature has ample means to eradicate things into oblivion....if that doesn't work, that Guy you don't quite believe in may vector a mile wide stone upon us in retribution.
