DL to State College, PA

From Ben Mutzbaugh's Aviation Blog on USA Today:

Delta to connect State College, Pa., with world's busiest airport

Beginning June 8, Delta Air Lines will add non-stop service between State College, Pa., and its Atlanta hub, The Associated Press reports. The flights will be operated by Delta affiliate Atlantic Southeast Airlines on 50-seat Bombardier CRJ-100 regional jets. With the Atlanta flight, State College's University Park Airport will have non-stop service to Cincinnati, Detroit, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. State College is home to Penn State University, which has more than 40,000 students.

If passengers fill up Delta's new Atlanta flight, that could help persuade other airlines to boost service to the central Pennsylvania airport, says Charles Welch, director of the Centre County Airport Authority. "You can bet the other airlines will have an eye on this inaugural flight," he says to the Centre Daily Times of State College. He mentioned US Airways flights to Charlotte, Continental flights to Newark or a non-stop to Chicago as possibilities for the airport. In the immediate future, however, airport officials say the Delta flights will help make for a reduction in flights by Northwest. Welch believes that Northwest's cutbacks have "significantly affected international students, faculty and staff traveling from Penn State," the Centre Daily Times writes.

FARE UPDATE, as of 11:15 a.m. ET: Don't expect business travelers or other mid-week fliers to making a beeline for Delta's new route. According to the airline's website, an round-trip from State College to Atlanta runs a whopping $889.90 for an advance-purchase fare with a Monday departure and Tuesday return (June 11-12). Stay over Saturday, however, and the advance-purchase fare drops more than $600. The airline's website returned a $288.80 round-trip price for a Friday-Monday trip (June 8-11).

I guess BloFares(tm) are alive and well at DL, too.

I don't think the ATL-UNV leg is what they're banking on. The connecting traffic coming from somewhere else will probably be priced more competitively.

It would seem that a line from JFK would help. There hasn't been NY service to PSU in many, many years. And, considering DL has built up JFK as a significant gateway, the feed should be there.
