The thread about the "almost done deal" A340's gave me this idea. Why not revisit all of the great "done deals" we've heard about over the decades at our various carriers that now make up the happy family known as USAirways?

Maybe we can figure out some sort of prize for whoever posts the biggest whopper of a done deal that never happened.

Southern Division:

Tampa Crew Base - done deal
DC-8s re-engined with CFMs - done deal

USAir:

Orlando hub - done deal
United merger - done deal (twice)

I wonder if the United merger is a done deal, just not yet?

Flights to Japan.

(Of course, they'll start out as a UAL and/or AA code-share, but as soon as they're established, we'll really, truly, honest to God, buy our own A340's and do the service ourselves. That is, if only the pilots will agree to waive the international code-sharing restrictions in the just-ratified new [1998] contract...)

Sadly, there are still pilots who believe this.

Well I think before categorizing the 340 as one of the other "bad rumors", one needs to ask how US plans to prove it's very long haul capability for the upcoming China competition, which they have publicly announced to the DOT, and how, if awarded, they can fly the route in March 2008 with 330-300s? The answer is obviously that they will either need a 777-200ER, or a 340-300/500. There are currently 3-340s available for Lease starting in September. The 340, particularly the -300 is very compatible with the current fleet and any future aircraft deliveries (330-200) starting in 2009. The available 777s that I'm aware of are more than 11 years old. The two 340/500s from AC are only 4 years old. The only way I could see this rumor, or a substitute one of equal credibility, not materializing is if Parker withdraws his interest in Asia altogether - else how will he get there? Also, even if US could get Airbus to accelerate a few 330/200s to be delivered this year, they cannot reach Asia from PHL, other than very marginally to Japan. In my view PHX would be a poor 2nd choice. With regards to other comments that the 340 would also be used for PHL-TLV - I very much doubt it. US would likely get the MTOW (range) increased on two or more interior refurbished 767-200ERs and use that aircraft for TLV.
