I was watching the PHX F/A crew news for May 30th. These must be Dougs favorite, they dont seem to have any hardballs for him.

If you look at the section called "Effect of Shifting Corporate Culture" , he talks about USAirs mergers with Piedmont and AirCal.

Doug, USAir bought PSA, the other California airline. American Airlines bought AirCal in response. 🙄

ooops i meant to put this in usairways

So Drunken Parker misspoke, much like you did - you meant to post this in the USAir forum. B)

Seriously, though, he is truly an idiot.

Who the heck was Air Cal?

I'm just a dumb eastie, but geez...

Air Cal = a fairly small outfit working Calif for the most part. When American "went shopping", they looked at PSA and Air Cal....and, to the everlasting tragedy of the PSA guys that now find ourselves "here"...bought Air Cal due to the lesser expense involved.

who really cares? Don't care about PSA, Piedmont, Alliwhatever and AWA. Time to move on.

"who really cares?" Not all of us are fresh hatchlings from Mesa/AWA Elevation...and some have an appreciation of notions of heritage. PSA was a wonderfull outfit with some pretty great people. For example: My first checkride in PSA was administered by an ex Blue Angel with two credited Mig kills, who's also a heck-of-a-good guy in general. It was, mostly an "ex GI" airline overall. How "bad" do you think it was to do a walk around and actually see an enourmous Smile on the face of your plane?..and know that you were teamed up with fine pilots and great FA's as well...Sigh. Given your own "background"...I'm hardly surprised that you've no regard for anyone else's feelings about such, but they're nonetheless quite real.

As for "Time to move on"....Umm..TO WHAT? I just can't wait for the movies:

1) "Seniority Thieves"..."A sad commentary on the utter decay of youthfull morals in America"...Starring: A buncha' scabs and marginally qualified young punks who've bought their licenses and are easilly found on any street corner.

2) "Doogies' Next Disaster"..."All America waits with breathless anticipation to see what can possibly top the side-splitting hilarious stupidity of SHARES!!!".."SHARES left even the toughest critics rolling in the aisles...." All now wait in anxious anticipation of his next stand up performance".

Reviews of SHARES are coming in from around the world:

Lufthansa: Was ist denn das SHARES!!??...NEIN...Das glaube ich NICHT!!
Air France: SHARES?...C'est le Cochon!
Aero Mexico:SHARES? Es muy estupido!
El Al:Oiy Vey I thought that my uncle Mortie was the stupidest man alive...dont you know that now I know better.
Continental: Well..it actually sorta' works for us..but we do use native SHARES
Delta: Thank Allmighty GOD IN HEAVEN that we actually escaped from these hopeless idiots!!
United: I sure hope that we'll NEVER merge with these hapless buffoons!
Northwest: Look..Ok already; we're just coming outta' bankruptcy...but we're not THAT stupid.
Star Alliance: You can't "see" and quickly book european feeds from other airlines?..or even have the destination cities in you "system?...C'mon..you're just kidding us...umm..aren't you?

USAir bought (and dismantled) PSA...

and American Airlines in response bought (and pretty much dismantled) its similar competitor AirCal...

Both flew these BAE146 aircraft. Nowadays we have "Express" aircraft with more seats and more range than these workhorses. Food for thought.

From Wikipedia:
Air California, later AirCal, was a regional airline serving different points in the state of California and some neighboring western U.S. states. It was founded by a partnership of Orange County businessmen as an alternative to other airlines and what was left of the state's passenger railroad system. Their initial market of service as of their January 1967 debut was between Orange County Airport (SNA) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a previously unserved routing.

Old Air California Logo
[edit] Early Fleet
Air California was one of the last 20 carriers to use the four-prop Lockheed Electra in regular service. After the late 1970s, its fleet was composed primarily of Boeing 737 jet aircraft, with some DC-9s and BAe 146s as well.

[edit] Curiosities
One novel marketing program used by Air California in the early to mid 1970s was to offer school field trips to Sacramento at $25 a head, where school children would be taken on a tour of the California State Capitol, Governor's Mansion, and Sutter's Fort. Another marketing program took place in 1980, when AirCal began upgrading its fleet with the new DC 9-80 (MD80). For a short span of several hours at Burbank Airport, one could purchase one-way passes good for up to one year to either of the two bay area airports it served at that time (San Jose and Oakland). The price? $9.80 one way/$19.60 round trip, with a limit of four round trips. Later that year, when AirCal began service to SFO, the passes were valid for that destination, too.

Air California 1981 LogoIt was a fierce competitor of Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), another intrastate carrier. After the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 it opened service to Reno, Nevada and Portland, Oregon, but became a takeover target for the larger national carriers.

During the 80s, it changed it name, adopted a bright new logo and image, including a new wardrobe for its employees by noted fashion designer, Mary McFadden. During the 80s, it operated a mix of Boeing 737-300s, McDonnell Douglas MD-80s, and British Aerospace BAe-146s. Ironically, the latter two types were also operated by its rival Pacific Southwest Airlines on several of the same routes.

[edit] The end
Air California, along with its equipment, routes, and facilities, was eventually acquired piecemeal by American Airlines in 1987. American continued to fly many repainted and refitted AirCal aircraft from a new hub at San Jose International Airport until American transferred the bulk of its San Jose operations to Reno Air in the mid-1990s.

Naah...I think it was just past his/her bedtime

Addendum for Mr/Ms "who really cares?" "Elevation"...if you've ever seen the movie Top Gun..recall the scene with Kelly when she's sitting in the O' Club with the "old man"...said "old man" was/is Vice Admiral Pete/aka "Viper" Pettigrew, who got the appreciative cameo via his working with the film at Miramar...such was the quality of the people we had at PSA...and NO..I hardly expect some Mesa/AWA "I'm a Pie-u-lut...just ask me" type to "get" the notion of any respect for such. After all?=You guys mostly BOUGHT your licenses "fair and square", without ANY possiblility of ever "washing out"..and felt zero compunction to actually serve your Nation, nor could you likely have ever actually made the cut for such. There are an apparent small handfull of the AWA to which this doesn't apply...you're hardly one of them.

Yessiree..........................You "deserve" instantly enhanced "seniority"

On "Doug"....Yup..sigh.

Ya' know?..Call me old fashioned..but if I were taking millions per year from the cookie jar for my "brilliance" and "expertise"...I'd feel at least SOMEWHAT obligated to actually KNOW SOMETHING about the business entity's history/etc that I was supposedly "managing". It hardly takes rocket science/med school levels of study to do such......just the very SLIGHTEST concern on the top guy's behalf.

Of course: I've only a basic Bachelors in Bus Admin..and I do actually care about people...and I'm not essentially stealing millions from anyone,...so; what TF do I know?

I do see the folly of attempting to "instruct" as to any notions of "reasonable"/"respectfull"/etc..as this is just become a game of "I want mine" from the west..and "you can't have what's not yours" from the east.

It's just gonna' be a recipe for disaster on all fronts.
