Get ready for more concessions if economic sanctions are imposed on Iran. The analysts all say oil will go above $100 a barrel if this happens. I think it's time for a fare war. What do you think? Southwest could really put the hurt on the rest of the industry since they were the only airline that was smart enough to hedge their fuel.

If oil heads above $80 and stays there, there's no way the average American will be able to keep up with the price of groceries or commuting to/from work, let alone be buying airline tickets.

If oil hits $90, it won't be a matter of concessions. Instead, it will probably be a Force Majeure declaration with at least 100 aircraft grounded...

Its not that they were smart enough, they were the only ones that had the money to do so. Get ready for whatever the fall out of this is because no one will be exempt from the outcome airline employee or not. Even the darlings at B6 are not out of danger.

Force Majeure won't work in that case, system protection is still in affect unless the twu cuts another LOA to let the company off the hook.

Princess,
A couple of things.

I for one would welcome it.
BECAUSE,
It would be the vehicle that would lead to "shaking out" the"Industry that NEEDS to be shaken out", letting the "law of the jungle" prevail, ridding the US airline system of OVER capacity, AND lead to HIGHER fares.

(All you "pro business/Pro management types who keep preaching to us DUMB pro union Idiots, about "WHAT THE MARKET WILL BEAR, and SUPPLY AND DEMAND, Well to that I say, BRING IT ON BROTHER) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Second,

I'm glad AA is sitting on 4.3 BILLION $$$

(and) Third(ly),

Texas or NO texas, AA needs to distance themselves from DUMBYA, and warm up to Venezuala and Hugo Chavez !!

If oil goes above $100 barrel, maybe it will help get rid of the scab airline NWA faster. NWA management is one of the reasons the industry couldn't raise fares to match the price of fuel. NWA blocked almost every fare increase that was attempted and now NWA is in bankruptcy. Go figure.

Bring it on. I agree with NH/BBs and Princess.

Last summer I posted that I hoped that oil would hit $80+ and stay there long enough to exterminate the weaker domestic bankrupt carriers. Oil spiked and jet fuel spiked even further, but not high enough or long enough to kill the weak.

Now is the time. Cutbacks will be painful, and fuel will cost more, but the weak must die.

For several years now, everyone has been pretending that WN and B6 could add billions of seat miles of domestic capacity and that somehow the legacy airlines would simply cut their costs sufficiently to compete with this glut of additional capacity.

Well, costs have been slashed to the bone, and yet the legacy airlines have yet to remove sufficient capacity. Fares must increase further, and that will happen when capacity disappears. No sign for now that B6 or WN are gonna draw down any capacity, so might as well be CO, NW, DL, UA, US and AA.

Medicine rarely tastes good, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take it.

For those that welcome $100 oil just remember the old saying "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it".

When I mentioned this possibility back on Jan 6th,

FWAAA scoffed and made fun. Now it seems to be serious debate material.

Not so funny now is it FWAAA?

No, Decision, it's still very funny to me. I want to see oil skyrocket. It's not like I burn all that much gas - and high prices will encourage long-overdue conservation. Screw those who think a 50 mile (or 75 or 100 mile) daily commute is responsible. Let 'em move closer to their job (or school or whatever).

I do apologize to you for posting such a glib response two weeks ago:

So what you're saying is "Some month in the future is gonna be really, really bad at AA?" 😀

Believe me, I didn't mean for that response to imply that I didn't believe your prediction would never come true. Honestly.

Personally, I'd be happy if we'd just kill that ugly little monkey Chavez, and take out that Iranian bozo with the unpronounceable name--the one who looks like he should be driving a cab or running a 7-11--instead!

Well mga707,
Refering to Chavez as a "ugly little MONKEY" is comical, given the fact that "we" have one residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

And I certainly would'nt put Chavez in the same catagory as the President of Iran !!!

Bottom line,

(Nukes aside), Mabey, just MABEY, this *UCKING COUNTRY will one day, WAKE UP and realize that our Meddling in other country's affairs, never works.!!!

The US, helps everyone(countries), and has NO friends. Plain and simple !!

In a lot of instances, it's not "help" money, but "BRIBE" money, or "pay to have friends, money" !!
(mga707, does the TURKS(TURKEY) come to mind) ???????????

OIL.

We NEED it. THEY have IT. !!!!!!!!!!!
Like a "john" in the red light district, "we will always PAY" !!!!!!!!

BUT,
Then again, "we could always BOMB EVERYONE" !!!!!!!!!!!!

Many other countries (European & Asian) have had deliberately high fuel prices to encourage efficiency etc. Gas prices in much of the world are twice US (where I am they are about 1.50USD a litre) It won't be the end of the world...
