I'm starting a new thread about attrition. Can we please stick to the topic of how many f/as are leaving and how it does or does not affect each of us? We have beat the dead horse of who did what to whom in the past long enough. Let's try to look to the future. Now, that being said...

Once again, if you have different numbers from these, take it up with Flight Service Management and the Flight Service Webmaster. They are now posting a total attrition for the year only. I am subtracting the yearly total posted last month from the current posted totals to determine the previous month's attrition.

Currently posted attrition for 2008

Domestic: 115
International: 73
Total: 188
Of the 188, 99 are retirees.

Attrition for 2008 posted LAST month
Domestic: 69
International: 48
Total: 117
Of the 117, 61 are retirees.

Thus, through the wonders of basic arithmetic, we have the March attrition numbers...
Domestic: 46
International: 25
Total: 71
Of the 71, 38 were retirees.

These are all "active" f/as as far as I know. The retirement count here does not include retirements from furlough. There is no way to tell for sure because the retirement roster of the Flight Service website includes only those f/as who want their retirement info to be posted.

Some observations:
1. This is the first year since I started flying that the percentage of retirements is over 50% of the total attrition. 99 retirees this year represents 52.65% of total attrition.
2. The current monthly average attrition is 62.67. If the average stays in this range, we are on track to lose 750+ f/as this year. (My personal opinion is that the attrition rate is going to increase as the year progresses.)

Not to be a negative nelly, but with the potential pull down in domestic flights after summer, recalls might not happen till the end of the year if this year at all. All though, I really have heard more people talk of retiring this year than in the past. Time will tell. What do others think? I in no means think there is going to be a huge run on retirements. Maybe slightly above past averages.

I just happened to look at the attrition summary just now. The numbers have changed slightly from what was posted on the 8th. Since this is the middle of the month, I am assuming that these are corrected numbers from what was posted earlier in the month.

Totals for 2008
Domestic: 122---------an increase of 7
Internatl: 74----------an increase of 1
Total: 196-------------an increase of 8
Of the 196, 100 are denoted as retirees; so that is an increase of 1 in the retirees.

Since these are YTD numbers, I have no idea whether the change is in this month's totals or a previous month. The average attrition/month is now up to 65.33 for the year.

Jim....

Again, thank you for your honest posts....Quick question, for anyone here who can answer it, Why does the domestic operation have so much more attrition than the International? Does anybody know?

Let's not even bring up the 15-17 hour 2-days or the 24 hour 3 days in domestic. I would rather slit my wrists than work any of those. And, the company continues to build an SLT 3-day sequence that has rarely, if ever, completed. At some point with almost every trip, the crew goes illegal at some point. You go through ORD once and DFW 3 times (IIRC) in 3 days with ORD-SFO, LAX-DFW, and DFW-LAS legs. With the duty days scheduled at 12:45 and the flying time at over 8:30, there is no margin for any problem whatsover.

Most of them no service flights, how hard can it be?

No food service maybe, but everyone of them is at least a beverage service, including DFW-SAT and SAT-DFW--where actual service time is only about 20-25 minutes. Most of us don't have the luxury of being MIA f/as who can just announce to the world that they are not going to do a service for "safety" reasons and get away with it.

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen. Sing it over....
As someone who switches back to DOM from time to time, I can attest there is nothing harder on the body than working those crap short legs where a beverage service is required. Then multiply it by 4 X 3! You come off them feeling like you have been hit by a truck. I really don't understand it, but it is just plain crap, crap, crap. Shame on you Mike!
