FAA approves Philadelphia's plan to extend one runway

The Federal Aviation Administration will allow the Philadelphia International Airport to extend one of its runways, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The extension will make the runway 7,000 feet long, allow it to be used by larger jets and cut delays. The project faced opposition from critics who said it would increase noise, air pollution and the possibility of a crash.

Once the extension of 17/35 is completed, it should help some (assuming that we're around in 2007 to see it). The problem will come during the extension process. At least during parts of the construction, the usable runway length will be shorter than it is now.....

Dagnabbit! For a second I thought this would be about 8/26. How did that runway get approved in the first place (10 years ago) if they KNEW they would only be able to depart on 8 and land on 26?? It's only 50% effective. If they could have extended 17/35 then, would there have been a good case for building 8/26?

This is great news.. Southwest will really appreciate it when they increase their service with the 30 gates they are going to get in the next two years.

They wouldn't need it since they wouldn't be operating scads of RJ and prop flights to markets within 100-150 miles like ISP, LGA, EWR, HVN, HPN, BWI, DCA, IAD, MDT, SBY, ABE, SWF, etc.

If US makes it to 2007, this would certainly help the PHL operation run a lot more smoothly as far as airfield capacity goes. But to fix the hub at PHL is going to require management to recover from their recto-cranial inversion.

You think Southwest can't make use of a 7000ft Runway? Think again.

It has nothing to do with THAT -- more so that they wouldn't be clogging up the airfield with 19-50 seat aircraft taking passengers distances that require less time to drive.

It is an amazing coincidence - and with the lead time for projects such as this I'm sure that's all it is.....

WN, in addition to putting winglets on their 737-700's, is uprating the engines to 24K thrust versions. I have heard that with both mods, they can depart at maximum gross weight at 100 degrees from a 7000 ft runway. If true, they could depart from 17/35 and fly non-stop to any point in the lower 48, eastern Canada, northern Mexico, or the Caribbean.
