Organizers for Festival of Flight 2003’s general aviation air show, “Barnstorming at its Best,†have finalized the air show’s line-up, headlined by the acclaimed Red Baron Pizza Squadron and its Boeing Stearman biplanes.

Included also are Julie Clark, Tim Weber, Jimmy Franklin, John Mohr, Michael Goulian, Jim LeRoy and a fly-in by the South Carolina Breakfast Club with members from six southeastern states. The show is Sunday, May 18, at the Fayetteville Regional Airport at noon, and hosted by Cape Fear Aero Association, Fayetteville Regional Airport Commission, and Piedmont Hawthorne. Admission is free and parking is $5. Coolers and backpacks will not be permitted.

The Red Baron Pizza Squadron will thrill audiences with its formation takeoffs, precision flying, hammerhead turns and barrel rolls for which they’ve earned national acclaim. The Squadron has been performing since 1979, performing in hundreds of air shows each year. The eight professional aerobatic pilots have a total of over 75,000 flying hours combined. The biplanes were all manufactured between 1941 and 1943, built originally as WWII training planes to prepare U.S. Army and Navy pilots.

“We have sought out the most talented acts to participate during Barnstorming at its Best,†said Gordon Clapp, president and CEO of Festival of Flight 2003, adding “we are delighted to have the finest airshow performers as a part of an exciting weekend that will properly kick-off the 11-day centennial celebration.â€

Opening ceremonies will begin with a dignitary fly-in introduction. Following will be a performance by the Hardees Airshow Team by Flights Unlimited Inc., whose motto is “Flying for the Kids†and features giant scale radio controlled aircraft. The airshow will begin with the Golden Knights Parachute Team bringing in the American Flag during the playing of the national anthem.

Julie Clark will dazzle the crowd with a spectacular and patriotic aerial ballet, performed in her Beechcraft T-34. Fans love the multicolored wing tip smoke streaming behind her while fireworks explode and patriotic music plays. Jimmy Franklin has the world’s only jet powered Waco bi-plane and his Wing Walker acts. Franklin has been flying airshows for over 30 years in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Australia. He has received many awards during his years as an airshow professional including the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship (1989), Clifford W. Henderson Achievement Award (1999), and he was the first person to receive the Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award (1986 & 1999).

Also performing will be Jim LeRoy, with Bulldog Airshows. Jim, a third generation pilot, has performed at the Sun’n Fun EAA Fly-In, in Lakeland, Florida, the Langley AFB Airshow in Hampton, Virginia, and the Winnipeg International Airshow in Manitoba, Canada. His aircraft is a factory Pitts S2S with stronger wings, a larger, more powerful motor, and an oversized, custom propeller.

Another premier act will be that of Michael Goulian. Michael is a three- time member of the US National Aerobatic team and the 1995 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. His aircraft is the incredible CAP 232, which has a phenomenal roll rate of 420 degrees per second. During his performance, Michael will experience up to +/- 9 G’s and his airspeed varies from zero to over 275 miles per hour.

John Mohr will be maneuvering his restored 1943 stock 220 Stearman bi-plane during “Barnstorming at its Best’. Mohr has been thrilling crowds for more than 25 years. His is the recipient of both the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship and the Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award (2000).

Tim Weber’s routine consists of high-energy aerobatics including tailslides, torque rolls, and other maneuvers uniquely choreographed to music that he wrote and recorded for his air show performances. Tim also interacts with air show announcers while flying his EXTRA 300, providing exciting cockpit narrative.

Other performances will include, OTTO-the Helicopter Clown, offering rides and performing aerobatics for kids of all ages, and Dan Buchanan’s ‘Flying Colors’. Dan is a paraplegic with more than 2,400 hours of flight time in hang gliders. He launches his glider from a custom designed rolling launch pad and rapidly climbs to an altitude of 1500 feet. In addition to hang gliding, Buchanan is a licensed pyro technician. He combines his love for special effects with his airshow act, using fireworks, smoke, streamers and flags, all while communicating with the audience over the PA system. He will be flying a night aerobatic routine as a prelude to a fireworks display.

Local acts will include Roger Marshall will perform in his Russian YAK-55, World Class Unlimited Aerobatic aircraft. Goodie Thomas III will fly his Sukoi SU 31 Russian World Class Aerobatic aircraft. In addition to the performances there will be numerous static displays including a restored “Constellation,†Delta Air Lines DC-3 and 1931 Travelair, and many other vintage, military and business aircraft.
