My lastest job in the aviation world as a flight mech on a B737-800 has wetted my appetite and i am curious about becoming a flight engineer when this job is over. Can anyone provide any information as to weather they think this may be a viable option for my career. The other thing is where is a good place to look for training? Are PFE's becoming a thing of the past or are companies more inclined to employ a PFE rather than a pilot looking for an upgrade to the right seat as soon as he can get it. Anyones perspective would be appreciated.

I know that most of the airlines are flying the 2 seaters but there are still lots of 27's and 47's flying cargo around the world. I guess my question is do you think this would be a good "niche" to pursue?

If you can go UPS or something like that....they may pay well as air cargo has done nothing but grow for the last 20 years.Best bet would look into payscales...

In addition to what delldude said, there's the factor of how long you would want to pursue this "niche". Even in the cargo world (or at least the "premium" end that UPS, FedEx, etc, represent) the need for FE's will be decreasing over time. If you're looking for something to do for a few years, that won't matter, but if you're looking at it for a 20+ year career it would be another story - you could end up with only the less desirable end of the cargo world to work for.

A commercial operator with flight engineer requirements will hire a pilot with a commercial pilot certificate and the flight engineer written accomplished so that eventually you will progress through the cockpit. Also captains will go for the FE seat when they reach age 60. Perhaps the military still has a need just for FEs, otherwise I think the job market for just a FE position is nil.
