For all you DC-10 fans!

Thirty years with AA. Many of them with the DC-10.
I grew fond of that aircraft. Yea I know number two engine sucked but that was the nature of the beast. Non revving was great. I flew many trips on the Diesel.
Trans cons, Hawaii, Caribbean, I always wanted to fly to Auckland when we had the route.
Never did. The only eyesore was the crash of flight 191.
Human factors is a killer.
 
Yeah the #2 engine sucked but it was really a great airplane to fly on I took 3 trips to HNL on it as well as many mainland domestic trips. Pilots I knew loved to fly it too. It rode the bumps pretty well. I just don't have the love for the new airplanes like the 330 and 777 like I did for the old analog airplanes like the 727 DC-9 and DC-10. I never had the good fortune to fly on a 707 or DC-8 although I did have a chance to fly a DC-8.  I loved the 10. Fortunately for me I have flown the 10 many times as well as the L1011. Some of our younger people on here have not and will not get that chance. 
 
I remember when N101 came through Tulsa on its way to the desert someone took the Data plate from the L1 door..Probably one of the older guys that spent their career on the 10!!

A well built airplane and it is what I cut my Heavy Transport teeth on, except for the short time I spent on the C-5 at Lockheed!

What was wrong with #2 engine, if I may ask?

Definitely a great 'plane to ride in. Took them over the pond a few times, and on shorter flts. like MKE-MSP.

As a ramp lead, ours (NW) tended to be bad for my blood pressure, but still...

No need to ask if you have ever had to open one up in the winter in MSP or DTW.
 
I see, now. The location. I thought it might have been from an operational standpoint in the air.

Also something a human did. The 10 was a great airplane.i loved it but hated the MD 11
 
From what I've been told, both the DC-10, and the L1011, were both originally designed as two engine Aircraft. The number two engines were added to comply with FAA regulations for over water flights. E-tops was not adopted until after both Aircraft were designed, and was pioneered by TWA. The "S" duct design was developed by Boeing for the 727, and they held the rights to it. Lockeed, paid Boeing to use it on the L1011, Douglas did not.

It came free.
True....it was such a hit, they extended that patio on the MD-11.
