She wanted a Great Dane as they make great family pets, so we tracked down a litter of 13, born 1,000 miles away in Oregon. Their owner emailed us a photo showing a chaotic jumble of paws, snouts and tails.

Twelve were entangled with one another, but our eyes were drawn to one pup standing apart from the rest. He was clearly the runt, endearing him to Christie immediately.

George made the long journey from Oregon to Phoenix by plane and we picked him up from the freight area, tired but unshaken.

When I was young, a friend of mine had two Danes. One Chocolate and one Domino. I was over at his house every day. When he answered the door, there was one at each side. I did not come in till invited. Very cool dogs. One day, the male (the chocolate one) took a nip at me. They had him put down. That broke my heart and it haunts me to this day. I always wonder if there was something I could have done different to not provoke him. Must have been 35 years ago or so.

Always wanted a Dane but their life span is so short and they have health issues. I could not go through that every 8-10 years. Too heart breaking.

George is a very handsome dog. Sounds like he is a pleasant hand full.

My neighbor has a dane and she is the most adorable dog in the neighborhood.
Only problem is the food intake and food excretion. They carry a backpack when they take her for a walk. Regular doggie pooper bags don't cut it.

That brings back memories. One of my friends chores was to clean out the dog kennel. Geez. I never saw crap that big before. Miami summer and a big honking dog biscuit. Mmmmm mmmmmmmmm good. We used a big garden shovel to gather them up.

Good times.

The sad thing about big dogs like Great Danes is the shorter lifespan compared to smaller dogs.
