GM Spending $17 Million a Year on Viagra

Son of a B$%@! LET THEM FAIL!

Did you read anything but the headline? Blame the union on this one if you really think it is so bad. Wonder what you would say if it were your airline...Let it fail? Maybe we should let your airline fail when its time comes for providing benefits to non traditional households...or prescriptions that cover diseases that are directly related to the alternative lifestyle.

Copay of $18 according to GM's agreement with the United Auto Workers. The large number of retirees on the GM plan might be a partial explanation for the size of the Viagra bill.

Wow, an $18 copay is really pretty good. Hope you or your partner never need this since you think this is so unreasonable. Isn't it great that some retirees even have medical coverage? Many of us in this industry and many others won't.

Maybe when we get that universal health care, it won't be an issue.

All you see when you look at this company is the corporate greed and the union, not the 3.5 million employees affected by letting this fail. This will impact you in several ways that have already been covered and some that have not. More foreclosures, lower property value, higher crime. It will affect you whether you believe it or not and it won't be pretty. The dollar figure and other intangible ramifications for letting it fail could be much greater and longer lasting than the one for bailing out the industry. And your song might change.

I am usually on your page, but there is a much bigger picture that you fail to see on this one.

It gets even better:

USNEWS&WORLD REPORT

Obama May Appoint Auto Industry Czar

The troubles of the ailing auto industry are quickly becoming a major focus for President-Elect Barack Obama's young administration. As Congress and President Bush debate an industry bailout, sources indicate that Obama may favor creating a White House office, headed by an "auto industry czar," to oversee reforming the troubled American auto industry.

The Detroit News reports that both "Bush and Obama are signaling they may favor appointment of an auto czar to oversee the government's efforts to funnel emergency assistance to automakers." Congressional leaders and members of both the outgoing and incoming administrations have all said that automakers might receive federal aid only on certain dictions, including efforts "to further improve fuel efficiency and show that they have a plan to return to profitability. Automakers could also be required to give the government preferred stock in the companies and accept government representatives as board members. As in the 1979-80 Chrysler bailout, workers may have to make wage concessions."

I don't know about letting them fail but bailing them out when in a lame period with limited prospects of a return to profitable production isn't the wisest choice either.Who's going to spend for a new vehicle anytime soon?Uncle Sam all too often jumps in with his wallet when in reality it would be better economically for some to go.His intervention hasn't helped the airline industry.....now they're knee jerking with the bailout....nobody has a clue how to fix this...prepare for a global meltdown.

Let them go BK, fire all upper management and CEO's, break the UAW death grip and restructure.

Either way the employees are looking at hardship very quickly. The unions will only drag this out longer and cause GM to come back to the feds window for more money in 6 months. This should have been done 3 years ago when they had the chance. But there's no coincidence that the timing of this happens days after the union fed democrats take office.

If we bail them out then they should bail everyone out as the pain is so widespread. When does the madness ever stop?

Here it goes.....got debt?

``Illiquidity in this sector is raising the cost and reducing the availability of car loans, student loans and credit cards,'' Paulson said today in a speech at the Treasury in Washington. ``This is creating a heavy burden on the American people and reducing the number of jobs in our economy.''

Cool...I'll never have to worry about putting gas in my tank or paying my mortgage now.

let's examine the auto industry for a minute. Right now GM, Ford & Chrysler are in money trouble and therefore in need of a bailout.

So what about Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes & Mitsubishi? ALL manufacture in the United States. None of these entities apparently requires Corporate Welfare in order to survive.

Some will quickly blame the UAW and some will only be partially correct.

Management is responsible for the design and marketing of the products sold. Additionally they are responsible for the production management and quality assurance aspects of automobile manufacturing.

So it would seem that if you can't build a stylish, well made, reliable car at a price that people will want to buy then you fail in the marketplace. Capitalism is a system that has winners and losers.

To bail out years and years of bad management seems to be a poor use of taxpayer funds to me.

One sure fire way to determine if a bailout is needed is for congress to pass a bailout bill with enough strings attached that if the monies are not really needed then the car companies will leave the money on the table and their bluff will be called.

One "String" I would insist on is that the monies be paid back.

Good point, I wonder how much of this is really related to GMAC. They a re huge finance company and was well known to bring in more revenue from mortgages then auto sales.
