Hawaii Fare wars are off again in Hawaii and this time interisland hopping too, as low as $29 bucks, isn't that sweet?

Another fare war set until end of year this time. Inner island hoping will pick up greatly. Southwest determined to become king of the skys in Hawaii, especially inner island travels.

C'mon E, you know this is a move to gain more market share of passengers from other airlines. SWA is moving to take over the inner island hopping in Hawaii, as I stated when we first launched service to Hawaii. And even more and more Hawaii routes will follow next year. Wait and watch what happens in Hawaii...

Ah.... so you admit that your employer is deliberately selling their product for less than it costs to deliver in hopes of putting another company out of business?

That's what we in management call "predatory pricing" and it's resulted in several lawsuits initiated by the DOJ.

Close but not quite all correct. Deliberately selling tickets at the lowest price they can offer (and still make a profit, as long as the number of passengers grab on) as well as to encourage customers over to SWA with the super low ticket prices. SWA is not looking to put another company out of business, they are simply trying to increase their market share to make the new flights all worth while and not have to pull out and give the passengers less choices and cost sky rocket once again.
Call it what you will, it's all about "competition" within the airline biz and is actually part of the norm within the industry. All airlines always do sales on flights when they fire up or expend into added flights or new routes. SWA just has the balance sheets to do it better and at the lowest cost possible and STILL make profit.
Hawaii is one of those things that they now say, "we should have done Hawaii a long time ago", they like it that much.

WN should really focus on flying people between the mainland and the islands. That's where the money is. It's not flying people between the islands.

Getting into the inter-island business hasn't ever worked out in the long run for anyone who's tried it. It's no different than Alaska -- we've seen MarkAir, Morris and others try to put a dent into AS's interstate flying, and it didn't work out too well.

Even DL had to pull back from their attempts to take on AS from SEA.

Watch how Southwest does it correctly and maintain. IMO would be the only airline to pull it off.

Hawaiian Airlines is seen as ohana within the community. That stuff matters in Hawaiian culture. A lot...

If there's a Hawaiian word for "carpetbagger"... that's how you'll be viewed by the locals.

to be honest when they announced the intra-Hawaii stuff, I thought someone in Dallas was really smoking the good stuff.
It wont last. It wont last and WN will quickly find out they are burning their motors up trying to do it like Aloha did. Go for their engine MRO I guess.

and not to get OT but I can't leave it alone, Delta didn't really "pull back" from SEA due to AS. Delta has pulled back from SEA some due to COVID. When.....if.....Asia actually opens back up, Delta gets it staffing back to normal and its fleet count back to pre-COVID levels you will slowly see Seattle flying coming back.

Making a point here E. All airlines do introductory fares to promote flying to gain some market share, as I stated to begin with. No airline is setting out to put other airlines out of business, it's just the airline industry when airlines move into new markets and add new flights as Frontier is now doing over there in ALT...

And to keep things hoping in Hawaii SWA is running their sale over in Hawaii thru the end of the year with their intro fares at $39 buckeroos.
If Frontier's fare sale in ALT touches on any of SWA's routes it wouldn't surprise me to see SWA drop their prices too, maybe down below 69. $59? $49?? or maybe even $39 to keep up with Frontier in ALT...

No such airport as ALT.

No, airlines don't always do introductory fares in new markets. You offer them when you're not selling enough seats based on natural demand.

If you truly believe the goal of running any business isn't to run off the competition, you're a fool.

Wow! Didn't catch this in the last article. In Sep SWA will go from 38-60, an increase of 22 added inner island flights in Hawaii. Fantastic news for the Hawaii locals and also the tourist that like island hoping to see more and more of Hawaii. 22 addition flights AND the fare sale of $39 island hoping will go hand and hand. Great way to pick up market share.

And now Hawaiin is matching said sale pricing.
A great comparo between SWA and Hawaiian on these fare wars. While Hawaiin Air's planes are older, not much diff in the two except for leg room, quieter a/c, easier and faster reservations and purchasing, newer aircraft and much cleaner kept as noted, and of course not brought up in this comparo SWA fly's bags for free as well as free carry-ons. Where Hawaii has charges for. Most tourist would have bags and carry-ons but not so much biz travelers only going for a few hours and back. Also as noted the replacement interior on Hawaii's planes were lighter and thinner which also translate into firmer seat bottom cushions but hard to say if matters on 20-30 min short flights.
Overall, about the same except for these highlights; SWA has more leg room (comfort), larger aircraft, cleaner and newer a/c, easier and faster bookings, bigger o/h bins (bonus), bags fly free with carry-ons, and of course the very well known first class customer relations with our famous F/A's as well as free beverages (also on Hawaiin).
Looks like the $39 fares are a popular choice in Hawaii. Will be greatly appreciated thru end of year for sure. Thanks to Southwest for bringing them.
