America West to enter Hawaii market

Phoenix, AZ, Jun. 5 (UPI) -- America West Airlines has announced plans to compete with Hawaiian Airlines by offering daily non-stop flights to Hawaii from Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Phoenix-based America West has started training personnel on over-water procedures so the company can obtain necessary certification to fly to Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Sunday.

The company also needs an exemption to rules that require planes to stay within 60 minutes of a suitable airport at all times.

America West spokesman Carlo Bertolini said the airline plans to enter the Hawaii market whether or not a planned merger with bankrupt US Airways succeeds.

"The training was going on for months before the merger announcement," Bertolini said. "I think it's no secret Hawaii is one of the most popular leisure destinations. (America West is) very popular among leisure travelers because of our competitive fares."

A bankruptcy judge ruled last week that other bidders for US Airways have until July 1 to enter a proposal.

The correct headline wording, of course, would be "...to RE-enter Hawai'i market".
How quickly some forget...

Any idea on target start date and does anyone know if the First Class cabin will be extended to 24 seats from the current 14 for the dedicated Hawaii aircraft.

Why would they add FC seats (and presumably remove coach seats)?

How many people purchase FC?

Great for non-revs, but a stupid move for the company, the most over served market with the lowest yield plus it failed the first time. I still hope it works out.

Start date is anticipated to be January, 2006. However, the FAA still needs to sign off on a bunch of stuff. The initial three planes are either in ETOPS refit or are scheduled to go in for refit in the very near future.

The latest figures are from the 4th quarter 2004, but according to the BTS 4 of the 5 markets with the largest fare increases (of the top 85 air travel markets) were in Hawaii. For each of the quarters in 2004, either 3 or 4 of the top five markets with the largest fare increases were Hawaii markets.

4th quarter 2004 data:

In addition, there's one thing to keep in mind when talking about yields - mainland/Hawaii service is long haul (LAX-HNL is farther than JFK-LAX) so CASM is lower than your typical domestic flight. So lower yields don't necessarily mean lower profits.

Will the 757's be getting an interior face lift and more F Class seats while the life rafts are installed in the ceilings?

Approximately 83 more miles LAX-HNL than JFK-LAX. I can't imagine that's the reason yields are low to Hawaii.

True, but JFK-LAX is not your typical domestic flight either - it's long haul also. CASM would also be lower than for a typical domestic flight.

Are any of the US B757s ETOPS? Just wondering...........
[post="277367"][/post]

No.. None of the US 757's are ETOPS capable.. It was discussed many times but US Air never had Boeing doing any of the provision work for ETOPS capability.

It was decided years ago that making the 757 ETOPS capable was to expensive.

About a 1/3 are EOW capable for flying into the caribbean..

Had a trip last week to MAD and flew with some one who has a friend in planning. He said the target date for HNL is Nov 1st using A330 AC. Trip will be PHL-PHX(LAS) layover, work PHX (LAS) to HNL layover and back the same way. Now this is what he was told. :)
