Inhofe Says Repealing Wright Amendment Would Harm Oklahoma
Tulsa - The controversy over Southwest Airlines and Love Field is getting personal -- and local. In response to Senator Jim Inhofe's support of a bill to force Southwest Airlines out of Love Field, a Texas senator is sponsoring a bill to shut down commercial airline flights to Tulsa International Airport.

Republican Senator Jeb Hensarling has named his bill the "What's Love Got To Do With It" Act. He call's it a 'lighthearted swipe' at Inhofe.

Inhofe sponsored his bill after other legislation was introduced that would repeal the Wright Amendment, which requires Southwest Airlines to fly to adjacent states.

Inhofe says if the Wright Amendment is repealed, it would put Southwest Airlines -- a discount carrier -- and American Airlines, which has a huge maintenance base in Tulsa in direct competition.

Inhofe's bill would close Love Field to commercial air traffic. American Airlines supports the idea to even out competition.

If the Wright Amendment were repealed, Inhofe says Oklahoma airports would be harmed because it would allow Southwest Airlines could make long-haul flights instead of stopping neighboring states first, reducing the number of flights coming through Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

Southwest argues the opposite is true and has an entire website dedicated to repealing the Wright Amendment.

(Only error -- Jeb Hensarling is a Representative, not Senator from Texas.)
