Airlines brace for fall out from Iraqi turbulence
2003/2/7
LONDON, Agencies
We''re in a much more difficult situation than we were in the last Gulf War in 1991, said James Beer, vice president Europe of American Airlines, the world''s biggest airline.
The last Gulf War came really at the end of a period of relatively robust economic growth and we now face today as an industry very significant losses already, he said.
Many big U.S. carriers such as United Airlines and U.S. Airways have already filed for bankruptcy protection to try to keep flying, Beer noted.
All U.S. carriers are suffering very significantly and so the last thing the industry needs is another serious shock to demand, he said at the forum organized by Economist Conferences.
