IAM Gets Pushback Work
At 11:15 p.m. August 19, 2005 General Chair Kevin Graf received an email message from NW Labor Counsel David Driscoll:

This will confirm our discussion that effective 11:01 p.m. CDT, the Company has imposed new terms and conditions of employment for AMFA represented employees. These terms were previously communicated to AMFA on August 18, 2005, and AMFA was specifically advised of the Company's intent to delete from Article 2.C. air starts, taxi, tow, pushback tractor operations and communication with the cockpit work from AMFA's scope of work. It was communicated to AMFA that the Company would, under these imposed terms and conditions, have that work performed by IAM-represented employees.

This means that ESEs will now be performing this work.

The IAM was wrong for doing that work where mechanics were staffed, but what you fail to realize is that the rampers did 95% of the pushbacks in the system.

And one group of workers at one company does not make a whole union scabs and they AMFA/NWA contract was modified and the IAM has pushback language in the IAM/NWA Fleet Service Contract.

Guess you cant understand it is not AMFA's work anymore as their contract has been modified, and the language was always in the IAM Fleet Service Contract at NWA.

And ALPA is crossing the picket line too, helping cleaning planes and aircraft movement, guess they are performing AMFA's work!

ALPA Not Honoring AMFA Strike

Aug. 20, 2005

The Master Executive Council (MEC) of the NWA chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l has decided that NWA pilots will not honor the picket lines of striking NWA employees represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association. Union leaders judged that a sympathy strike action was not in the best interests of NWA pilots and other NWA employees.

"I am deeply disappointed the parties were unable to reach a negotiated settlement," NWA MEC Chairman Capt. Mark McClain said. "The current environment requires labor costs to be part of an overall solution. Unfortunately, Northwest management continues to overplay its hand by demanding labor costs well below its competitors."

ALPA has stated since April 2003 that NWA management and all NWA employees would need to participate in a joint solution to help the Company overcome its financial difficulties. NWA pilots acted in December 2004 when they agreed to provide NWA with $265 million annually in wage, work rule and benefit changes.

"There is still time to secure our Company's future, but it will require a combined effort by NWA employees and management," McClain said. "Union leaders and senior management must meet face to face and hammer out a joint solution now. It will not be simple or painless. Everyone, including management, will need to share in the sacrifice."

The NWA chapter of ALPA represents 5,700 NWA pilots. Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world's oldes and larges pilot union representing more than 64,000 pilots at 43 airlines in the United States and Canada.

You can spin it any way you want to, but the people who do that work are on strike period! Any one who performs anothers work while they are on strike are scabs plain and simple!! And for the IAM to do this whether they support AMFA or not is criminal! But all it's really about are dues anyway right 700!!

The language in AMFA's contract only let them do pushacks where mtc was staffed, the IAM does the pushbacks everywhere else the language is contained in both contracts.

As of 12:01am NWA was free to modify the AMFA contract which it did and it removed the pushbacks and ancillary duties associated with it and AMFA was free to withdraw services as they did.

What about the people (ESE's & CSA's) that have been performing this work at stations where NW has never staffed AMT's? They've been pushing, riding brakes, doing airstarts for years. Do you think they've been "scabbing" all this time?

"Union leaders judged that a sympathy strike action was not in the best interests of NWA pilots AND OTHER NWA EMPLOYEES". (Emphasis mine.)

Gimme a break. Since when are pilots concerned about other work groups? Or vice
versa? Everyone's out for themselves in this business.

You are missing the entire point here einstein! AMFA a labor union is on strike at NWA, The IAM another labor union is showing no support and actually allowing it's members to take the jobs of guys who are picketing. Like I said before if a person goes on strike and you start doing that persons job while he is on strike you are a scab! Read it slow so you will understand!!
