In memoriam: Colgan 3407

I'm trivializing nothing. Serious accidents have often resulted in dramatic changes to the industry... this one is no different.

It was a serious accident but the government took the tack that regulation of pilot schedules had to be dramatically increased.

This all happened after regional carriers were pressured into lower costs at the hands of their legacy carrier partners to the point that the economics of being a regional airline pilot are so unattractive that there is now a very real pilot shortage.

The problem was there in Dec 2013; it became a crisis in Jan 2014 with the new rules.

The future of the regional airline industry in the US will look very different in the future and the reason can be directly linked to the accident.

Nonetheless, I trust that the families and communities involved have found the strength to rebuild in the midst of crushing losses.
