Hot news, from local radio:
JFK-TUS, starting Sept 28. One daily rt flight. Assume it will be on a bus, don't think the 190 quite has the range.

It's about time somebody put TUS on their route map. Hopfully it will do good, even though it's a redeye, it will work. I wonder if CO will bring back it'a EWR-TUS flight as a show of force? IMHO, TUS is a bit underserved for a city it's size, mostly from the amount of people that are driving up to PHX to get better deals. WN is the biggest airline at TUS with 17 flights, but I don't think it's enough, they could easily do 25 a day and do really well. I just don't think they have enough planes to do everything.

I agree on all of your points. I'll bet that CO reinstates their TUS-EWR nonstop for the winter season. I'm kind of surprised about jetBlue--I figured if anyone new would start here it would be AirTran on either TUS-DFW or TUS-ATL, as AA and DL have those routes all to themselves.

I did see a Northwest route map recently showing all the proposed E-Jet routes, and it showed DTW-TUS and MEM-TUS both as future E-JET routes. AS brings back another SEA-TUS,overnighting at TUS. My friend at WN in TUS said they are trying to get a TUS-SNA or BUR or a ONT flight. They cant't get anymore LAX flights due to LAX not having the extra gate space. WN could definelty fill more SoCal flights.

If and when jB starts flying 190s out of LGB, a TUS-LGB trip or two would certainly make sense, especially now that they are starting service here.
As for WN, I personally wish they would reinstate the OAK nonstop they briefly operated about a decade ago. Along with a second MDW nonstop. Or a nonstop to HOU...

I do think SW will expand TUS down the road. I remember when there only 2 LAS-TUS n/s flights, now 5. I can see SW adding TUS-OAK(1), TUS-SLC(1), TUS-HOU(2), MDW(+1) and an ELP if the Wright falls. just my thoughts.......

As of a few months ago, SIX TUS-LAS rts.

btw (and to keep on topic), the jB service announcement was front-page news in this morning's 'Arizona Daily Star', complete with local "frequent East Coast flyer" reaction...

With what slots?

LGB-TUS isn't happening, ever. Unless the slot restrictions at LGB are lifted. Many people forget that LGB cannot be expanded without the expense of current flights. jetBlue rather use their valuable slots for long-hauls, not quick flights. And, sadly, the E-Jets do not qualify as RJs to get commuter slot exemptions.

Never say never as far as slots are concerned, although I'm sure TUS is a little further down the list than a couple other cities.

Jetblue might be using most of their slots for long-hauls today, but conventional wisdom says they need to offer a mix of short and long haul if they're going to be thought of as a serious choice as opposed to a novelty.

If you live in TUS, and have a choice of flying Jetblue in only one direction, why bother? Likewise, if you live in LA, why not fly WN or someone else with a little more coverage aside from a few cites on the east coast?...

Because a NONSTOP flight to New York has long been at the top of the wish lists of both the airport authority and of frequent business flyers here...
That's why jB's announcement was front page news in the AZ Daily Star!

I saw that as well...

Currently, NW has one MSP-TUS trip. Usually in the winter there will be a DTW flight (or an extra MSP section) and a MEM (Sat. only)...Last time around, they flew the MEM and one of the MSP sections with a CRJ.
