Come on guys, this is ludicrous rhetoric. I have a 25 year ALPA pin, I joined JBLU not as a furloughed pilot from a failing or downsizing carrier. I love this industry and have no animosity for anyone involved in it. My story started in 1967 and I have enjoyed the best and worst of this business. None of us are invincible nor are our beloved carriers. If you believe your Union will take care of you when your company is in trouble, you really are drinking the Kool Aid. None of us over at JBU are anti anyone or any carrier. We are here because our jobs are enjoyable which is something I do not have memory of always with my past carrier (union). No hate, no animosity, just enjoying our jobs and the people who have given a very enjoyable and rewarding job to. No we are not homeless, underpayed low rents who are glad for anything coming our way. We are like you. We like what we do. May I inquire which Union carrier is guaranteeing anything right now that we do not have at JBLU. If you reply that it is a pension, or a non contractual (evergreen) contract period to, maybe you should think twice. I saw one pension vanish into a fraction of it's 'guaranteed' value. You may also. It is a business in which we work for someone else and we all must accept what is offered by that someone else. If you think unions will protect that down to the letter of agreement now days, you are holding onto something that does not exist any longer and I also am sorry for that. Let's just do our jobs and quit beating one another up for one thing or another. We are not the reason for your problems. Let's not cause more problems for one another. JBLU employees have the same guarantee as you, which depends on the well being and success of our company. 😉

Its people like you that make the company a success.....what a refreshing change from the venom on the UA and DL boards.

Segue;

I'm well known on these boards as being VERY staunch Union, but I will admit that "harmony" is a refreshing thing.

BUT,
All of the pro/anti union retoric at B6 does'nt mean a thing !!

Here's why.

Speaking ONLY for the pilots, the Time Proven formula (equation) goes like this.

A. New "start-up" doing great has non union pilots
B. "Start-up" expands, does great, harmony continues
C. "Start-up" continues expansion, starts making good profits, harmony continues.
D. "start-up" continues MORE expnsion, and starts making LARGE PROFITS.
E. Harmonious pilots ask for equal pay, to say, WN.
F. "Start-up says NO" !!

And WITH OUT FAIL,

G. Harmonious pilots finally get a UNION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just a matter of time.

Just out of curiosity, NHBB, how many airlines since deregulation have gone through all seven of your stages, A thru G? How many are still here? After all, if it's a Time Proven Formula, you should be able to come up with any number of examples.

Consider this; As much of a scientific formula as you have assigned this 'evolution of the upstart' - it just may be a new day and a new way of doing business in the industry.
What airline was not an upstart at one point in it's history? There have always been Donald Burr's and others who promise the world and deliver trash only to fill their own financial fancies. Your outline is very accurate almost to the tee and many of us have witnessed these events time and again. I am also a believer in Union representation when needed but I also know that there are a few very good businesses in the world who do not abide by the 'reap your profits through the sweat of your employees and add to the bottom line by squeezing concessions' style of operation. There are in all businesses innovators who believe there is a better way to deliver the product and whom recognize the bottom line is often determined by the cohesiveness and attitude of the work force. Yes, there is a line for employee attitude on the balance sheet. I am an eternal skeptic but having been here from before day 1 of operation with B6, I have repeatedly seen these innovative and open qualities which set this management/corporate structure apart from the old cookie cutter upstart route. I'll be the first to admit that I may eat my words and I hate Kool Aid but I see a different type driving force behind this operation than those that have come and gone. With no disrespect for the union carriers, I don't see the unions as being a great stop gap in the industrywide decimation which is hammering many carriers in our country and others today. It is what it is and it's power is limited. It does not determine if the employees are of a better quality or standard because of a membership in a trade union which seems to be the message coming across sometimes in these posts. May we all survive and thrive in our personal endeavors.

What is this, a top six list of barriers to economic and job growth in the US?

Its a list of where jetBlue employee groups can go when they get tired of being exploited by Needleman and his cronies.

Funny, their stock options and performance bonuses seem to be doing them quite well.

Fubijacker, where are your stock options????

So they can pay a % of their paycheck to be exploited by a union? Great idea.

Excellent post jbu320.
The truth of the matter is all of us want our companies to succeed, but there are just no guarantees. Especially not now.
